Rogue names in Dungeons & Dragons work differently from most character names because rogues rarely go by the name they were born with. A thief in Waterdeep might be Silas Vane to the city watch, Nine-Fingers to the guild, and Old Copper to the fence who buys his goods. That layering is what makes a rogue name feel authentic: a plausible given name and surname for the character sheet, plus one or two street aliases that hint at reputation, method, or a physical tell.

Good aliases are short, concrete, and slightly sideways. Animals (the Magpie, the Ferret, the Cormorant) suggest habits; objects (Lantern, Wick, Silk) suggest a trade or trick; and coins (Halfpenny, Sixpence) suggest someone who works cheap or started poor. Ironically respectable aliases (the Vicar, the Choir Boy, Mother Moth) are a staple of thieves' guilds and criminal fiction. Avoid stacking Shadow and Dark into surnames; real rogues want names that do not announce them.

Race matters too. Halfling rogues use cheerful family names (Kithri Quickhands, Merric Tealeaf), elf rogues use canonical elven surnames (Adrie Nailo, Varis Galanodel), and tiefling rogues often carry infernal-sounding given names (Damakos, Kallista) with a plain human surname to blend in.
