D&D Bard Name Generator

A D&D bard name has to do two jobs at once: fit the character's race and homeland on the character sheet, and sound good shouted from a stage. That is why most bards end up with two names – a birth name that follows the race conventions in the Player's Handbook (a half-elf might be Aramil Ravenlark, a halfling Rosie Goodbarrel, a tiefling Damaia) and a stage name or epithet they actually go by, like Silvertongue, The Gilded Lark or Countess Nocturne. Tieflings especially suit this: their culture already allows a chosen 'virtue name', so a tiefling bard called Reverie or Encore is perfectly in-lore.

Good bard names lean on rhythm. A two-syllable first name plus a two- or three-syllable surname (Tobias Fairweather, Isolde Rennick, Kaspar Merriweather) rolls off the tongue when the DM introduces you. Musical words work best when subtle – Larkin, Cadence, Halcyon – rather than a dictionary of Italian tempo markings. For comic bards, an overstuffed aristocratic name (Reginald Thistlewhistle, Sir Ballad of the Broken Lute) does the work; for a College of Lore or Eloquence bard, an old Welsh or Norse skald name (Taliesin Reed, Skald Astrid Ravenmouth) grounds the character in real bardic tradition.
