Bard Name Generator

The word bard comes from the Celtic professional poets: Welsh beirdd like Taliesin and Aneirin, and Irish filid such as Amergin. Their names are plain personal names with an honorific (Taliesin Pen Beirdd, "chief of bards"). Norse skalds like Bragi Boddason and Egil Skallagrimsson carried bynames earned in the hall, and the troubadours of Occitania (Bernart de Ventadorn, Beatriz de Dia) took their names from their home towns. Those three traditions still shape how a bard's name should sound: a real given name plus a place, a patron, or an earned epithet.

In Dungeons & Dragons, bards can be any race, so the name depends first on ancestry: halfling bards suit homely names like Perrin Underbough, elven bards suit lilting ones like Naivara Songdusk, and tiefling bards can carry a virtue name like Vainglory. What bards add on top is a stage name. Scanlan Shorthalt is a gnome name; "the Nightingale of Neverwinter" is a reputation. Comic bards (Bardolph Bumblestrum, Percy Plucksalot) have a long tradition too, from Shakespeare's clowns to Critical Role.
