Funny bard names for D&D, Baldur's Gate 3 and other RPGs: one-word names like Lutenant and Troubadork, spoken puns like Kent Carryatune and Aria Kidding, and stage names like Maestro Mediocre.

About funny bard names

The bard is the one class whose whole job is to be heard, so a joke name is half the performance. Bard humor draws on a short list of subjects, and this list works through them: instruments (Lutenant, Glockenspill, Bagpipedream), music theory (Treblemaker, Minor Inconvenience, Bflatbroke), life on stage (Encore Nobody Asked For, Kevin the Opening Act) and the rules of the game itself (Bardic Uninspiration, College of Lore Dropout, Heat Metal Band).

The names come in two sizes. The one-word names use letters only and are 12 characters or fewer, the limit World of Warcraft sets for a character name, so Troubadork or Harpocrite can go straight into a name field. The longer ones are for tabletop sheets, single-player RPGs and chat handles: spoken puns like Kent Carryatune and Aria Kidding, pompous stage names like Maestro Mediocre, band-frontman personas like Lance Powerballad, and one-liners the rest of the party will end up quoting.

Some of these are jokes players have traded for years, such as Bard to the Bone, Elfish Presley and Phil Harmonic, and a handful nod to real musicians without making fun of them. Everything is family-friendly: the jokes are about lutes, missed notes and empty tip jars, never about seduction rolls, and none makes fun of a real person.

How to choose funny bard names

  • Say a pun name out loud before you use it. Ken E. Sing, Wendell E. Stop and Anna Wun Anna Too only work when spoken, so they are at their best at a table where the DM has to announce them with a straight face.
  • For an MMO, pick from the one-word names and keep two or three spares. Most games let only one character on a server hold a name, and the obvious jokes go first.
  • Match the joke to the build. Bardmouth or Cutting Words, Blunt Delivery suits a Vicious Mockery specialist, Walking Inspiration Dispenser suits a support bard, and Seven-Minute Lute Solo suits the player who never stops performing.
  • Give the name a reason inside the story. Maestro Mediocre is funnier when the character chose it and believes it is a compliment.
  • Ask the table first. A serious campaign may want the pun as a stage name only, with an ordinary name on the character sheet.

Frequently asked questions

What are some funny bard names?

Lutenant, Troubadork, Kazoomancer and Treblemaker are one-word names from this list. Among the longer ones are Kent Carryatune, Aria Kidding, Maestro Mediocre, Nigel the Unrequested and College of Lore Dropout. The rest of the list runs from spoken puns to stage names and jokes about the rules.

Which of these names fit in an MMO name field?

The one-word names do. They use letters only and are 12 characters or fewer, which is what World of Warcraft allows, for example Bardbarian, Flutility and Onehitwonder. Other games set other limits, and only the game can tell you whether someone on your server already has a name.

Do these names work for D&D and Baldur's Gate 3?

Yes. A character sheet has no name field to get past, so the full puns and titles work at a tabletop game, and many of the jokes are about fifth edition bard features: Inspiration Die Hoarder, Jack of No Trades, Song of Rest (Nobody Rested) and Peerless Skill Issue. In a video game, check how long a name the game accepts before you settle on one of the long ones.

Are the names family-friendly?

Yes. The jokes are about instruments, wrong notes, tough crowds and dice. There is nothing sexual, none of the seduction jokes the class is known for, and no name makes fun of a real person.
