Avian Name Generator

Avian characters, bird-people rather than birds, show up across fantasy and science fiction: D&D's aarakocra, kenku and owlin, Warhammer's kroot, harpies and sirens from Greek myth, Japanese tengu, and the countless original birdfolk of webcomics and indie games. Their names tend to follow one of three conventions. The first imitates bird sound: strings of hard k, r and q sounds with doubled vowels (Kreeka, Quirrek, Ikki, Ssrek), which is exactly how aarakocra names are built in official D&D material. The second, used for kenku, is a name-as-sound: kenku mimic noises they have heard, so they are known by phrases like Broken Chime, Sword Rasp or Dripping Tap. The third is the compound clan or deed name, Stormfeather, Talonshade, Farflight, popular for tribal or Warriors-style avian societies.

Mythology and taxonomy add a more dignified register. Latin bird genera (Corvus, Falco, Strix, Ardea, Bubo) double as strong names for nobles or scholars, and legendary birds and bird-gods (Garuda, Horus, Simurgh, Fenghuang, Huginn and Muninn) suit elders, priests and monsters. Ordinary bird names like Wren, Lark, Piper and Peregrine remain in use as human names and are perfect for half-avian or shapeshifter characters.

Combine registers to sketch a whole society: trilled personal names, a compound clan name, and a mythic honorific for the flock's leader.
