About aarakocra names

Aarakocra are the bird-folk of Dungeons & Dragons, natives of the Elemental Plane of Air who nest on high peaks in the Material Plane. Their language, Aarakocra, is built from clicks, trills and whistles, and their names follow suit. The Player's Handbook and Elemental Evil Player's Companion give examples like Aera, Aial, Aur, Deekek, Errk, Heehk, Ikki, Kleeck, Oorr, Ouss, Quaf, Quierk, Salleek, Urreek and Zeed. Notice the pattern: names are usually two to four syllables, lean hard on K, R and Q sounds, and double their vowels or consonants to mimic a bird's call (Kreek, Oorr, Skree). Aarakocra names are not gendered, so any of these works for any character.

Every name in this generator was written to sound like something a beak could actually produce. Short, sharp names (Krik, Zeed, Kiv) suit scouts and monks; rolling trills like Chirreek, Zhirreek or Arrakee feel older and more ceremonial, the kind a wind-shaman or flock elder might carry. Aarakocra do not use family names in the human sense; if you want a surname, they typically identify by their flock, aerie or peak instead, such as Kreek of the Cloudspire Aerie.

When you speak these names at the table, exaggerate the doubled letters. A rolled R and a clipped K sell the flavor far better than a spelling ever will.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pick a name your table can actually pronounce; two syllables with one trill (Kreek, Skree, Ikki) reads clearly and still sounds authentically avian.
  • Aarakocra names are ungendered in D&D lore, so choose purely on sound and personality rather than looking for a masculine or feminine option.
  • Add a flock or aerie epithet instead of a surname: Zaakh of the Storm Aerie, or Errik Cloudspire, tells the DM where your character comes from.
  • Match sound to role. Clipped, hard names suit fighters and monks; longer trilling names with softer vowels (Aeeka, Ooreek) fit clerics of the wind gods and diplomats.
  • Give the name a spoken cadence: many players note in their character sheet how the name is chirped, e.g. 'Kirreek, with a rising whistle on the last syllable.'

Frequently asked questions

How do aarakocra names work in D&D 5e?

Aarakocra names are transliterations of the clicks, trills and whistles of the Aarakocra language. They tend to be short, use hard K, R and Q sounds, and repeat vowels or consonants (Errk, Ooreek, Kleeck). They are ungendered and rarely include a family name.

Do aarakocra have last names?

Not in the human sense. Aarakocra identify by their flock, aerie or home peak, so a character might be introduced as Quaf of the Ironcrag Aerie rather than with a hereditary surname.

Can I use these names for kenku or owlin characters?

You can, but each race has its own flavor. Kenku usually take names from sounds they mimic (a squeaky door, a hammer blow), and owlin lean toward softer hooting names. These names are tuned specifically to aarakocra.

Are these names free to use in my campaign or published adventure?

Yes. All names here are original or drawn from the D&D SRD example list, and you are free to use them in home games, streams, homebrew and commercial writing.
