About zombie names
Zombies mostly don't have names, which is exactly why the names people give them matter. In zombie fiction there are really four naming conventions. Survivors give nicknames to the walkers they keep seeing: "Half-Jaw," "Crawler Kate," "the Bloater by the gas station." Games name infected types by behaviour or sound: the Clicker and Bloater from The Last of Us, the Boomer, Spitter and Charger from Left 4 Dead, the Screamer, the Runner. Comedy zombies get puns and portmanteaus: Rigor Morris, Doug Graves, Rotney, Sir Bites-a-Lot. And the most unsettling option is the human name still on the name tag: "The Crossing Guard," "The Bride," "Zoe Deadman."
The named zombies people remember (Bub from Day of the Dead, Big Daddy from Land of the Dead, Tarman from Return of the Living Dead, R from Warm Bodies, Ed from Shaun of the Dead) all share one thing: the name is short and it hints at who they were before. That's the lesson. A good zombie name is either a survivor's blunt shorthand or an echo of a lost life.
Use the gruesome one-word names for hordes and minor threats, the type names for game design, the puns for Plants vs. Zombies-style comedy, and the job-title or human names when you want the reader to feel something.
Tips for choosing a name
- Pick the tone first: gory monikers (Maggotmouth, Rotgut) for horror, puns (Doug Graves, Rigor Morris) for comedy, job titles (The Lunch Lady) for creeping dread.
- For game design, name infected types after what players hear or see, the way Clicker, Boomer and Spitter do; the name should teach the player how to react.
- Survivor nicknames should sound like something said under stress: short, physical, and often a little cruel (Half-Jaw, Stumps, Old Dangler).
- Give your zombie a pre-death name plus a survivor nickname if it's a recurring character; the gap between "Zack Graves" and "Lefty" is where the pathos lives.
- For a zombie costume or Halloween party name, puns like Ima Goner and Paul Bearer are crowd-pleasers; keep them to two or three syllables so people can actually say them.
Frequently asked questions
Do zombies have names in movies and games?
Usually not, but notable exceptions include Bub (Day of the Dead), Big Daddy (Land of the Dead), Tarman (Return of the Living Dead), R (Warm Bodies), and Ed (Shaun of the Dead). Games more often name types, such as the Clicker, Bloater, Boomer and Charger.
What are some funny zombie names?
Pun names work best: Rigor Morris, Doug Graves, Paul Bearer, Ima Goner, Frank N. Stein, Rick Mortis, Sir Bites-a-Lot, and Deadward are all popular styles for comedy zombies and Halloween costumes.
How should I name zombie types for my own game or story?
Name them after their defining behaviour or sound so the audience learns what to expect: Runner, Spitter, Screamer, Crawler, Bloater. Add a plain descriptor for variants (Feral Runner, Armored Bloater) rather than inventing new words.
Can I use these zombie names commercially?
The invented names and puns are free to use. A few entries reference existing characters or franchise types (Bub, Tarman, Clicker, Boomer) for context; use those as inspiration rather than lifting them into a commercial product.
