Abyssal Name Generator

Abyssal is the language of demons in Dungeons & Dragons and the fantasy tradition that grew from it: the tongue of the Tanar'ri, the chaotic evil fiends of the infinite layers of the Abyss. Unlike the ordered, Latin-flavored names of devils and the Nine Hells (Asmodeus, Mephistopheles, Dispater), Abyssal names sound broken and wet. Consider the canon demon lords: Graz'zt, Fraz-Urb'luu, Juiblex, Yeenoghu, Zuggtmoy, Kostchtchie. They pile up Z, X, K, Q and doubled consonants, crack words with apostrophes and hyphens, and favour endings like -oth, -ath, -ek, -ul and -rrak.

A demon lord rarely goes by name alone. The name is followed by a title that stakes a claim, Prince of Undeath, Lady of the Thousand Hooks, Eater of Names, and the greatest demons are often known only by epithet: the Pale Night, the Gaping Maw, the Unmaking. Lesser demons (dretches, quasits, vrocks, hezrous, balors) take shorter, uglier names, often with a mocking nickname their master gave them.

The Abyss itself has names worth using. Canon layers such as Azzagrat, Thanatos, the Gaping Maw, the Endless Maze and Shedaklah show the pattern: either a guttural proper noun or an evocative description of a horror.
