Zanpakuto Name Generator

In Bleach, a zanpakuto is a Soul Reaper's sword and a living spirit, and its name is something the wielder has to learn rather than choose. Tite Kubo's names follow a few clear patterns. Most are compact two- or three-kanji compounds that read like a haiku fragment: Zangetsu (slaying moon), Hyorinmaru (ice ring), Haineko (ash cat), Kazeshini (wind of death). Others take the classical form 'X no Y', as in Sode no Shirayuki (sleeve of white snow) or Kamishini no Yari (god-killing spear). Many end in -maru, an old suffix for treasured swords and boys' names, or in a nature word (-getsu moon, -zakura cherry blossom, -kaze wind).

The imagery is deliberately Japanese: seasons, weather, flowers, moons and Buddhist or Shinto figures like Jizo, Vidyaraja and the four guardian beasts. Bankai names then expand the shikai name with a grand modifier in front, so Senbonzakura becomes Senbonzakura Kageyoshi and Hyorinmaru becomes Daiguren Hyorinmaru. A good original name usually hints at the sword's ability without stating it, which is why Kyoka Suigetsu (mirror flower, water moon, an idiom for illusion) works so well for an illusion blade.
