Shinigami Name Generator

Shinigami (死神, literally "death god") appear across anime and manga in very different forms, and their names follow different rules depending on the series. In Bleach, Soul Reapers are the samurai-like officers of the Gotei 13, and their names read like old Japanese aristocracy: family name first, then a given name, often with archaic or elegant kanji (Kuchiki Byakuya, Ukitake Jūshirō, Kyōraku Shunsui). Noble houses have grand surnames while Rukongai-born cats get plainer ones, and captains frequently carry names that echo their zanpakutō's element.

Death Note takes the opposite approach. Its shinigami are inhuman creatures from another realm with names that sound nothing like Japanese: Ryuk, Rem, Sidoh, Gelus, Zellogi, Deridovely, and the tongue-twisting Armonia Justin Beyondormason. Those names are built from harsh consonant clusters, odd letter doublings, and no recognizable roots, which is precisely what makes them feel alien. Series like Soul Eater, Black Butler, and Yami no Matsuei add still more variations, from Western grim reapers to bureaucratic afterlife clerks.
