Yeti Name Generator

The word yeti comes from the Sherpa yeh-teh, roughly "rock bear" or "animal of the rocky place," and the Himalayan peoples who first described the creature had several names for it: meh-teh (man-bear), dzu-teh (the larger cattle-bear), teh-lma (the little man), and the Tibetan mi-gö or migoi, "wild man." "Abominable Snowman" was a 1921 mistranslation of metoh-kangmi, "man-bear snowman," and it stuck. Names that borrow these roots, or Tibetan and Sherpa words like kang (snow), ri (mountain), and dorje (thunderbolt), sound like they belong on the slopes of Everest.

Western fiction added two other registers. Horror and fantasy favor cold, hard compounds (Frostmaw, Rimefang, Coldgrave) or guttural single names (Vorgrim, Krogash) for a beast that stalks the pass, and Norse frost-giant names such as Thrym, Hrímnir, and Ymirson fit a yeti that is more spirit than animal. At the other extreme, cartoons and mascots want something warm and ironic, from Bumble in Rudolph to Marshmallow in Frozen, which is why names like Fluffernutter, Powder, and Boris are here too.

Decide which of those three yetis you are writing before you choose, and match the tone; a children's book yeti called Bhorgast will land as oddly as a horror yeti called Snowball.
