Snow Leopard Name Generator

The snow leopard is called the "ghost of the mountains" for good reason: it lives above the treeline across the Himalayas, Karakoram, Pamir, Tian Shan, and Altai, and is almost never seen. Naming one well usually means borrowing from that world. In Tibetan the cat is sah or shan; in Mongolian and Kyrgyz it's irbis or ilbirs; in Hindi and Urdu barfani chita, the "snow cheetah"; and its scientific name is Panthera uncia, which gives us Uncia and the old English name Ounce. Zoos and conservation programs regularly give cubs regional given names — Tenzin, Pema, Dorje, Batu, Altan, Aibek, Asel — which honor the cultures that share the cat's habitat.

Mountain names are the other rich vein. Everest (Sagarmatha in Nepali, Chomolungma in Tibetan), Annapurna, Makalu, Kailash, and Khan Tengri sound powerful and place the cat firmly at altitude, while glacier vocabulary like Névé, Firn, Serac, and Sastrugi gives an alpine texture most people haven't heard before. Ice-and-snow names (Frost, Blizzard, Aurora) are the obvious choice and still work, especially for a plush or a young character.

For fiction, the snow leopard's stealth suggests names like Ghost, Wraith, Whisper, and Smoke, and its coat gives Rosette, Dapple, Silver, and Slate. Kung Fu Panda's Tai Lung proved a snow leopard can carry a name that is short, hard, and a little cold.
