The word sasquatch is an anglicization of sasq'ets, a Halkomelem (Coast Salish) term for a wild, hairy giant of the forest, popularized in the 1920s by teacher J. W. Burns. Backwoods nicknames like Old Yellow Top, Patty, and Old Mossback come from real sighting lore and sound right coming out of a hunter's or ranger's mouth. Descriptive names built from forest, stone, and weather (Rockjaw, Widefoot, Woodknock) work for a sasquatch character who needs a name that reflects how it looks or what it does, and simple frontier names like Boone, Cedar, or Hank fit a friendly Bigfoot in a kids' book or a camp mascot.

Names built on reported habits (wood knocking, whooping, rock throwing) feel grounded in sighting culture rather than generic monster tropes.
