About yaelokre names
Yaelokre is the folk storybook project created by the artist Keath, and its songs, from Harpy Hare to the rest of the Hayfields EP, are framed as tales performed by the Larks: a troupe of masked travelling players who sing about hares, harvests, lanterns and loss. The fandom took to drawing its own Larks almost immediately, and a good Yaelokre name has to fit that world, which is part medieval English village, part children's picture book, and a little bit uncanny.
The register is pastoral and slightly old. First names come from hedgerow plants (Tansy, Sorrel, Teasel, Bryony), from old English diminutives (Maudie, Dorrit, Wilmot, Gilly) or from household things (Wicket, Thimble, Tallow, Quill). Surnames read like places or tools a villager would know: Thornmallow, Fennhollow, Lanternwick, Puddlemoss. Single names work too, because a Lark is often known only as Hobb the Tinker or Wren of the Hollow Hill, with the mask doing the rest.
This list mixes all of those layers: full storybook names, single given names and surnames you can recombine, occupational and mask epithets, troupe names for your own company of players, and hamlets, meres and lanes to set the story in. Nothing here is lifted from the songs, so your OC will not collide with canon.
Tips for choosing a name
- Build a Lark name in three parts: a plant or old-fashioned given name, a hedgerow surname, and the thing they are known for. Teasel Mirrowmere, the Cloth-Dyer tells a whole story before the character opens their mouth.
- Let the mask name the character. A hare, owl, deer or moth mask invites epithets like The Owlet of Ashenbrook or The Hare Who Counted Stars, which suit the songs' habit of naming characters by what they are and what they did.
- Keep the vocabulary pre-industrial. Hay, harrow, lantern, tallow, rushlight, reeve and almanac all sound right; anything that implies electricity or cars will break the spell.
- If you are naming a whole troupe, pick a place name first (Larchmoor, Puddlemoss, the Four Ways) and build the company around it: The Larchmoor Lanterns, The Four Ways Company.
- Match the mood of the name to the song you are drawing from. Yaelokre swings between cosy and melancholy, so a cheerful name like Gilly the Goose-Girl and a sadder one like The Lark Who Lost Her Mask both belong, but not usually on the same character.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Lark in Yaelokre?
The Larks are the masked travelling players at the centre of Yaelokre's storytelling; the songs are presented as their tales and performances. Fans use the word for their own original characters in that world, which is why most people searching for a Yaelokre name generator want names for Lark OCs.
Are these names from the actual songs?
No. Everything here is original and written in the same pastoral, storybook register, so you can use it for fan art, OCs, roleplay or original projects without borrowing canon characters.
What makes a name sound like Yaelokre rather than generic cottagecore?
Masks and performance. Cottagecore names stop at Clementine Fairweather; a Yaelokre name usually adds a role or an animal, such as Clementine Hobb, the Hare-Masked Fiddler, and leans a little older and stranger, with words like harrow, tallow and reeve.
Can I use these for a Yaelokre-inspired troupe, band or Discord server?
Yes. The troupe names such as The Lantern Larks or The Hedgerow Players were written for exactly that, and the place names like Puddlemoss Green and the Four Ways Crossing work well for server channels, story settings or art series titles.
