Puppet Name Generator

Puppet names have a very specific sound. Think of the classics: Kermit, Elmo, Grover, Lamb Chop, Punch and Judy, Howdy Doody, Charlie McCarthy, Bert and Ernie. Almost all of them are two syllables or fewer, heavy on plosive and buzzing consonants (b, p, g, z, k) that are fun for a puppeteer to bite into, and easy for a four-year-old to shout. Many pair a plain first name with a silly surname (Bartholomew Buttons, Nigel Knitwit) or an honorific with a texture word (Sir Reginald Fluff, Madame Frou-Frou), which instantly suggests a personality without a backstory.

The names here are sorted loosely by type. Short nonsense words like Wobbles, Nubbin, Boop and Snerd suit sock puppets and simple hand puppets. Full names with a fabric or sewing joke (Ferdinand Felt, Thaddeus Threadbare, Bobbin, Yarnold) nod to what the puppet is actually made of. Grandpa Gus, Aunt Prunella and Old Man Nettles are the crotchety elder characters every puppet troupe needs, and title names like Detective Doughnut or Mayor Marshmallow work for a cast of townsfolk in a school or church puppet ministry.

Say the name in the puppet's voice before you choose. A gravel-voiced monster named Grumbleton and a squeaky mouse named Pip Squiggle are already half-written.
