Original character names for the manga and anime Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, with a pattern for each of its nations. Roll names like Ren Shuurei, Nunuhaka, Zaur of the Dark Continent and Stolas, Dungeon No. 36.

About Magi OC names

This generator is for original characters in Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, Shinobu Ohtaka's manga and its anime. It is a fan resource with no connection to the author or publisher. Six canon names sit in the list as style anchors (Aladdin, Alibaba Saluja, Morgiana, Sinbad, Ja'far and Ren Kouen); every other entry is an original name in the pattern of one of its nations.

Kou Empire names put a one-syllable Chinese-style family name first and read the given name the Japanese way, as in Ren Hakuryuu; in the imperial Ren family most given names open with Kou or Haku. Imuchakk names repeat a syllable, like Hinahoho and Pipirika. Fanalis names are short and strong, like Muu and Masrur. Balbadd and Sindria draw on the Arabian Nights, Reim on Rome, Heliohapt on Egypt, the Kouga clan on the Mongolian steppe, Sasan on Persia and Greece, Artemyra on Greece, and Magnostadt on Europe.

Dungeons and djinn follow the Ars Goetia, a list of 72 spirits, and each dungeon takes its spirit's number, so Amon is the 7th. Djinn entries use a Goetia name with its number or an original name with a pair of virtues, as Amon is the Djinn of Politeness and Austerity. The list also holds titles for dungeon capturers, king vessels and household members.

How to choose Magi OC names

  • Pick the nation before the name. A Kou retainer, a Reim gladiator and an Imuchakk warrior should be easy to tell apart from the name alone.
  • Keep the family name first in a Kou name (Ren Shuurei, not Shuurei Ren), and save the family name Ren for members of the imperial house.
  • Look a djinn up on a fan wiki before you take it. The series has given many Goetia spirits to its cast, and an original character should not hold a djinn that already has a king.
  • Give a metal vessel user a title as well as a name, such as King Vessel of the Saffron Coast, and give their followers a matching one, such as Household Vessel of the Crimson Spear.
  • Most Fanalis and Imuchakk characters go by a single name. Add an epithet like Garm the Red Lion only once the story has earned it.

Frequently asked questions

How do Kou Empire names work in Magi?

The family name comes first and is a single syllable in the Chinese style; the given name follows and is read the Japanese way, as in Ren Kouen. Ren Shuurei, Ka Ryuuhou and Shuu Raizan in this list follow the same pattern. In the imperial Ren family, the princes and princesses of the main cast have given names that open with Kou or Haku.

Can my OC capture a dungeon and hold a djinn?

Yes, that is what the dungeon entries are for. Some use a spirit of the Ars Goetia with its number, such as Stolas, Dungeon No. 36 and The 12th Dungeon, Sitri; others are original djinn with a pair of virtues, such as Orvax, Djinn of Patience and Tides. The list leaves out the djinn held by the main cast, such as Amon, Baal and Zagan, but check a fan wiki before you settle on one.

Are these names canon?

Six of them are, as anchors for the style: Aladdin, Alibaba Saluja, Morgiana, Sinbad, Ja'far and Ren Kouen. The rest are original names drafted in the patterns of the series' nations. A name can still match a minor character by chance, so search for it before you publish a story.

Which names fit a character from Sindria or Balbadd?

Both lean on the Arabian Nights, so look for entries such as Zahira of Balbadd, Tariq of the Fog Troupe and Tamim of Sindria. Sindria takes in people from many nations, so a Sindrian character can carry almost any name in the list.
