Word Bearers Name Generator
Colchisian names for the XVII Legion's preachers
Word Bearers names in Warhammer 40K style: short Colchisian two-part names like Kor Vaelek and Sor Vethun, titled preachers such as Dark Apostle Zhaleth and Coryphaus Vadreth, possessed pairs, numbered Hosts and Heresy-era Chapters for your army list or fan fiction.
About Word Bearers names
Word Bearers names come from Colchis, the arid world where Lorgar was raised in the faith of the Covenant, and they are among the shortest in the Traitor Legions. The canon pattern is two clipped parts: Kor Phaeron, Argel Tal, Sor Talgron, Kol Badar, Zardu Layak, Sorot Tchure. The first part is often a single syllable (Kor, Sor, Kol, Hol, Tsar) and the second carries the weight. Preachers known across the Legion tend to go by one name instead, as Erebus, Jarulek, Xaphen and Marduk do.
Rank is priestly rather than military. In the Long War a Host is led by a Dark Apostle, with a Coryphaus as its war leader, a First Acolyte as the Apostle's pupil and an Icon Bearer carrying its standard. During the Heresy the Legion fought in named Chapters such as the Serrated Sun, and its first possessed warriors, the Gal Vorbak, are remembered together with the daemons they carried, as with Argel Tal and Raum.
The list holds original names for your own characters in eight styles: two-part Colchisian names, single-name preachers, titled Dark Apostles, Host officers, possessed pairs, Hosts and Chapters, epithets of devotion and revelation, and a small share of mortal cult leaders. A handful of canon names stay in as style anchors.
How to choose Word Bearers names
- Keep the first part short. A one-syllable opener and a two-syllable second part (Kor Vaelek, Sor Vethun, Hol Morvuth) sounds like Colchis; long, flowing names read as another Legion.
- Let the title do half the work. Dark Apostle Zhaleth, Coryphaus Vadreth and First Acolyte Thaldek tell a reader the character's place in the Host before anything else is said.
- For a possessed marine, name both souls. Write the pair in full (Kol Vethmar and Uzh'gorath) or join them with a hyphen in the manner of Burias-Drak'shal (Torvek-Shal'azur).
- Choose epithets about faith, not fear. The Ash-Tongued, Verse-Carver and the Twice-Anointed suit a Legion of preachers; skull and gore names belong to the World Eaters.
- Give the force a Host for the 41st millennium (The 19th Host, Host of the Black Litany) or a Chapter for a Horus Heresy army (Chapter of the Hollow Star).
Frequently asked questions
How are Word Bearers named in Warhammer 40K?
Most carry a short two-part Colchisian name such as Kor Phaeron or Argel Tal, and the best-known preachers are called by one name, like Erebus or Marduk. Titles are religious: Dark Apostle, First Acolyte, Coryphaus and Icon Bearer. The original names here follow the same shapes, for example Dhal Uzgrath, Tsar Vhoreth and Icon Bearer Durzhal.
Which names in the list are canon?
Lorgar Aurelian, Kor Phaeron, Erebus, Marduk, Zardu Layak, Kol Badar, Jarulek, Xaphen, Sor Talgron, Sorot Tchure, Argel Tal and Raum, Burias-Drak'shal, Criol Fowst and Cyrene Valantion are characters from the published fiction, and the 34th Host, the Chapter of the Serrated Sun, the Gal Vorbak and the Ashen Circle are named there too. The rest is written for this list in the same style, though short titles such as the Anointed or the Unburdened also turn up in the stories. This is a fan resource with no connection to Games Workshop.
What do Dark Apostle, Coryphaus and First Acolyte mean?
A Dark Apostle is the preacher who leads a Host. The Coryphaus is the Host's senior war leader and speaks for its warriors, the First Acolyte is the Apostle's pupil and likely successor, and the Icon Bearer carries the Host's icon into battle. Use the title in front of the name, as in Coryphaus Uzrek Morn or First Acolyte Zeskar.
Are these real ancient names?
No. Colchisian is a fictional culture, and the names are coined to sound like the setting. They are not Babylonian, Akkadian or names from any living tradition, and the Legion's faith exists only in the game's universe.
