About Alpha Legion names

Alpha Legion names are harder to pin down than those of any other Space Marine Legion, and that is the point. The XX Legion recruited across the galaxy and cultivates anonymity, so the canon roster mixes Greco-Roman grandeur (Alpharius, Omegon, Armillus Dynat, Kel Silonius, Arvas Januarius) with blunt Terran and Germanic surnames (Ingo Pech, Mathias Herzog, Sheed Ranko) and the occasional single operative codename like Exodus or Phocron. The overall effect is a Legion that sounds like the Ultramarines one moment and like a hive-world conscript the next.

When building an original name, pair a classical given name (Lysander, Thrasius, Octavian, Nikandros) with a short, hard surname of one or two syllables (Kroll, Raskov, Strake, Vorn) and it will sit comfortably next to the canon. Hydra imagery is used sparingly in the lore, so save names like Lernaeus or Hydrus for a Harrowmaster or a ship rather than every trooper. Ranks and roles (Harrowmaster, Headhunter Prime, Lernaean Terminator, Effrit Stealth Squad) make good titles to append to a name.

Finally, remember the Legion's oldest joke: any legionary might answer to Alpharius. A squad list that contains two or three of them is entirely in character.

How to choose Alpha Legion names

Mix registers deliberately: a squad of all-Latin names reads as Ultramarines, so drop in a Pech, a Ranko or a Herzog to make it feel like the XX Legion.
Keep surnames short and hard (one or two syllables, ending in a consonant); the canon favours Dynat, Skorr and Kahn over long flowing family names.
Use mononyms (Exodus, Phocron, Ascalon) for sniper specialists, infiltrators and human operatives who have shed their old identity.
Reserve hydra and serpent references for senior officers, warbands and vessels rather than rank-and-file troopers, so they stay meaningful.
For a post-Heresy warband, darken the tone slightly (Occam the Untrue, Quetzel Carthach) without going full Chaos; the Alpha Legion stays secretive, not frothing.
