Generate two word last names, surnames written as separate words with no hyphen: Van der Merwe, De la Cruz, Di Stefano, St. Clair, El Khoury, Ó Briain and other particle, saint and prefix names from many naming traditions.

About two word last names

Some surnames are two or three words long before anyone marries into them. A particle, a saint or a prefix stands in front of the main word and the whole phrase is the family name: Van Buren, De la Cruz, Di Stefano, St. Clair, El Khoury, Ó Briain. This list holds 1,000 surnames of that kind and not one has a hyphen. They come from Dutch, Flemish and Afrikaans (van, van der, ten), German (von, zu), French and Breton (du, le), Italian (di, della, lo), Spanish and Filipino (de la, del, San), Portuguese (da, dos), Arabic and Hebrew (Abu, El, Ben), Irish and Welsh (Ó, Mac, ap), plus Bengali compounds such as Roy Chowdhury.

Using two last names with no hyphen is also an everyday custom. In Spain and most of Latin America a person carries the father's surname followed by the mother's, as in Morales Quintero, and Portuguese families often pass on two surnames as well. The list shows a few such pairs. Customs differ by country, so read the examples as styles, not rules.

Capitalization varies too. Every entry starts with a capital because it stands alone. After a first name the Dutch write Anna van Dijk, Belgians usually keep the capital (Van Damme), and many Filipino families write dela Cruz in two words.

How to choose two word last names

  • Match the particle to the character's background: van der and ten are Dutch, von and zu German, du and le French, della and lo Italian, dos and da Portuguese. A Van der Meer and a Von der Heide come from different places.
  • Decide once how the name is alphabetized in your project. Dutch lists file Van der Meer under M, while Belgian and American lists usually file it under V.
  • Say the surname aloud with the first name. A long one such as Janse van Rensburg or Ortiz de Zárate sits best after a short first name.
  • For a Spanish or Latin American character use a pair such as Herrera Pineda: the father's surname goes first and the mother's second, and in daily life many people shorten it to the first one.
  • Irish-language surnames change with the bearer: Ó and Mac for a man, Ní and Nic for a woman's own family name, Uí for a married name. Pick the form that fits the character.

Frequently asked questions

Can you have 2 last names with no hyphen?

Yes, and in many naming traditions it is the normal form. Spanish and Latin American names put the father's surname and the mother's surname side by side with a space, and surnames such as Van der Merwe, Del Vecchio or Abou Jaoude are a single family name written as several words. How two names are recorded on documents depends on the country, so customs vary.

Is a two word last name one name or two?

It depends on the kind. De la Cruz, St. Clair and Von der Heide are each one surname: the small words belong to it and it passes down whole. A pair such as Morales Quintero is two surnames, one from each parent, and the next generation usually passes on only the first of them.

Should van, de and von be capitalized?

There is no single correct form. In the Netherlands the particle is lower case after a first name and capitalized when the surname stands alone, in Belgium and the United States it is usually capitalized everywhere, and German von normally stays lower case in running text. The list capitalizes the first word of every entry because each name stands alone, so follow the family's or the country's habit in your own writing.

Which languages are in the list?

The 1,000 names come from Dutch, Flemish, Afrikaans, German, Swiss, Swedish, Finnish, French, Breton, Channel Islands, Norman, Haitian, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Filipino, Arabic, Berber, Hebrew, Irish, Welsh, Sri Lankan and Bengali families. A few examples: Ten Brink, Af Klint, Le Goff, De Carteret, Lo Bianco, Dos Santos, Ben David, Ap Rhys and De Mel. Some are also written with a hyphen: Haitian Saint names, Hebrew Ben and Bar names and Arabic Al, El and Abu names appear both ways, and the list gives the open form.
