Wizard of Oz Name Generator

L. Frank Baum named his Oz characters the way a good storyteller names things out loud for children: short, bouncy, and often funny to say. Munchkins and Winkies get clipped, friendly names like Boq, Ojo and Jellia Jamb; magical folk get grander ones like Glinda, Ozma and Gayelette; and Baum's mechanical and patchwork creations sound like what they are (Tik-Tok, Jack Pumpkinhead, the Sawhorse, Scraps). The Nomes who live under the Deadly Desert have gruff, rocky names (Ruggedo, Kaliko, Guph), and hyphenated nonsense syllables (Ku-Klip, Coo-ee-oh, Tititi-Hoochoo) are a signature of the books.

Later Oz stories added their own registers. The 1939 film gave Kansas plain farm names (Hunk, Hickory, Zeke, Almira Gulch) that mirror their Ozian counterparts, while Gregory Maguire's Wicked invented a more literary sound: Elphaba, Nessarose, Fiyero, Frexspar, Avaric Tenmeadows.

This generator mixes canon names from every era with originals built on those conventions, sorted loosely by the four countries of Oz (blue Munchkin, yellow Winkie, purple Gillikin, red Quadling), the Emerald City, the witches and humbugs, the Nome Kingdom, and the animals and clockwork companions.
