Dark wizard names live at the intersection of scholarship and menace. The genre's touchstones show the pattern: Saruman, Grindelwald, Raistlin Majere, Elric of Melniboné, Xykon, Kel'Thuzad. These are not brutish warlord names; they sound educated, a little archaic, and slightly wrong. Latin- and Greek-flavoured first names (Lucian, Ignatius, Erasmus, Cassandra, Medea) do a lot of work because they suggest old libraries and older sins, while surnames built from grim English words like Ash, Grim, Wraith, Marrow, Blight and Vex ground the character in a specific place and family.

An evil spellcaster's name often changes across their life. A wizard begins as Absalom Verrick, becomes "Verrick the Hexbound" once the guild expels him, and is finally known only as the Ashenhand when he rules a tower nobody dares approach. Epithets in the fantasy tradition describe the sin or the specialty: the Corpsewhisperer, the Bone Scholar, the Faithless. Choose one that tells the reader what kind of forbidden magic the character practises.
