Generate Peter Pan names in J. M. Barrie's three registers: nursery nicknames for new Lost Boys and Lost Girls like Nearly and Tuppence, oddly polite pirates like Pardon-Me Perkins, and a child's map of Neverland from Thimble Cove to Bedtime Bay. The characters of the play and novel come first.

About Peter Pan names

J. M. Barrie named Peter Pan's world in three registers. The Lost Boys have nursery nicknames, one word each: Tootles, Nibs, Slightly, Curly. Hook's crew are oddly genteel or oddly blunt, and the novel writes several of them the way a ship's book would, with the first name cut short: Jas. Hook, Robt. Mullins, Geo. Scourie, beside Gentleman Starkey and plain Smee. London is Edwardian and proper, so a Darling child carries a string of given names, as Wendy Moira Angela Darling does.

The list opens with characters and places from Barrie's play and novel, plus two from his earlier Kensington Gardens story, as names only. Four entries in that block are film names and not Barrie's: Cubby, Skull Rock and Hangman's Tree from the 1953 Disney film, and Rufio from the 1991 film Hook. Everything after the block is new, written in Barrie's manner and none of it canon: Lost Boys and Lost Girls, pirates with a first mate's manners, captains and their ships, nursery families with their nannies and dogs, a few mermaids of the lagoon, a child's map of coves and woods, and games, pretend meals and adventures.

Fairies have pages of their own on this site, so Tinker Bell is the only one here.

How to choose Peter Pan names

  • Name a Lost Boy or Lost Girl with one nursery word. Barrie used a pet name (Tootles), a plain noun (Nibs) and an adverb (Slightly), so Nearly, Tuppence, Hopscotch and Rumpus all sit in the same family.
  • Give a pirate manners or a trade before you give him menace. Pardon-Me Perkins, Usher Quillfeather and Thimble Tom Thrupp belong on Hook's deck in a way that a skull-and-blood name does not.
  • Cut a pirate's first name short the way old ledgers did: Wm., Thos., Benj., Saml. It is the quickest way to make a new hand look like one of the novel's crew.
  • For a London family, stack two or three Edwardian given names in front of a gentle surname, then add the nurse and the dog. Nana is a Newfoundland, so a big, patient breed fits the part. Porthos and Luath in the list were the names of Barrie's own dogs.
  • Label Neverland the way a child labels a map, by who lives there or what happened there: Smee's Mending Rock, Hide-and-Seek Wood, Nibs's Lookout.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Lost Boys called in Peter Pan?

In Barrie's play and novel they are Tootles, Nibs, Slightly, Curly and the Twins. The 1953 Disney film uses the name Cubby, which is a film name and not Barrie's. The new Lost Boy and Lost Girl names in this list, such as Nearly, Hardly, Tuppence and Hopscotch, follow the same one-word nursery pattern and are not canon.

Who is in Captain Hook's crew?

The novel names Smee, Gentleman Starkey, Cecco, Bill Jukes, Noodler, Cookson, Skylights, Robt. Mullins and Alf Mason, among others. The list has those and then new hands in the same odd register, polite or blunt, such as Good-Form Figgis, Wm. Scuttleby and Just Higgs. It is not a full cast list, so go back to the book when a story depends on it.

Which names here come from the films?

Cubby, Skull Rock and Hangman's Tree are from the 1953 Disney film, and Rufio is from the 1991 film Hook. The other names in the opening block are from Barrie's own writing, and the rest of the list is new. This page is a fan resource with no tie to any film studio or rights holder.

Can I use these names for a play, a party or a story?

Yes. The new names are written for school plays, themed parties, pets, fan fiction and tabletop games. Place names such as Thimble Cove and Bedtime Bay, and games such as Hunt the Thimble and Crocodile Tag, suit party stations and treasure hunts. For anything you plan to publish or sell, look into the rights to the characters yourself, because the position differs by country.
