Scarecrow Name Generator

Scarecrows have a surprising number of real names already. British dialects called them mawkins, tattie bogles, hodmedods, and shoy-hoys; Japan's Shinto tradition has Kuebiko, a scarecrow god who cannot walk but knows everything; and Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote about Feathertop, a straw man brought to life by a witch. Fictional scarecrows tend to fall into two camps: the gentle guardian, like the Scarecrow of Oz or Worzel Gummidge, and the harvest horror, like Batman's Dr. Jonathan Crane or the figures that stalk cornfields in horror films.

Friendly scarecrow names usually pair a rustic given name with a farm-related surname or nickname: Barley Bill, Hezekiah Husk, Granny Gunnysack. Old Testament names like Ezekiel, Obadiah, and Jedediah instantly read as rural and old-fashioned, and homely materials like burlap, twine, denim, and sackcloth make good nicknames. Creepy scarecrows lean the other way, using descriptions of the figure itself (Stitchmouth, Sackhead, Nailhands), crop diseases (Ergot, Blight, Smut), or titles that sound like folklore (the Reaper of Hollow Field, the Watcher in the Rows).

Pick a name that tells the reader immediately whether the scarecrow is a protector or a threat, and let the field it guards inform it: a pumpkin patch, a wheat farm, and a cornfield each suggest different words.
