Lion Name Generator

Lion names in English almost always borrow from one of four sources. The first is Swahili and other African languages, because wild lions live on the savannas of Kenya, Tanzania, and southern Africa: Simba simply means lion, Nala means gift, Sarabi means mirage, and Rafiki means friend. Names like Zuberi (strong), Jabari (brave), Imani (faith), and Zawadi (gift) sound authentic because zoos and conservancies genuinely use them.

The second source is royalty and empire. Since the lion is the heraldic king of beasts, names like Sultan, Rajah, Caesar, Augustus, Cleopatra, and Sekhmet (the lion-headed Egyptian goddess) fit naturally. The third is the word lion itself in other languages: Leo and Leonidas come from Greek, Aryeh and Ari from Hebrew, Asad and Haidar from Arabic, Lev from Russian, Tau from Sotho and Tswana. The fourth is real and fictional lions people already love, from Aslan and Elsa of Born Free to Cecil of Hwange and Christian the Harrods lion.

This list separates naturally into names for a dominant male, a lioness, or a cub, plus place names like Serengeti, Tsavo, and Okavango and colour names such as Tawny and Ochre for a softer, more descriptive option.
