Generate names for the weaver in a town, a guild or a tale, from Maud Webster and Ansel Loomwright to fate weavers like Ysolde Fateweaver and workshop signs like The Golden Shuttle.

About weaver names

A weaver's name usually starts with the trade itself. When surnames settled in medieval Europe, the person at the loom became Webb, Webber or Weaver in English, and Webster, which began as the feminine form. The same thing happened elsewhere: Weber in German, Tisserand in French, Tejedor in Spanish, Tessitore in Italian, Tkach in Ukrainian, Takács in Hungarian and De Wever in Flemish. The neighboring trades left names too. Fuller, Tucker and Walker all mean the worker who cleaned and thickened woven cloth, Lister and Dyer colored it, and Shearman trimmed the nap.

Fantasy surnames come from the loom's own vocabulary. The warp is the set of lengthwise threads, the weft crosses it, heddles lift the warp, the shuttle carries the weft and the selvedge is the finished edge. That gives names such as Ansel Loomwright, Hesper Warpwell and Aldous Heddlewick.

The 1,000 names here are mostly weaver characters: trade surnames from several languages, craft compounds, by-names like Nine-Fingers Nan, guild ranks from apprentice to master, elf, dwarf, halfling and gnome weavers, and weavers of fate, dream and spell. A small share of figures from myth and literature carry a label that says where they come from. The rest are workshop signs, guild names and named tapestries and looms.

How to choose weaver names

  • Pick the register first. A historical town wants Maud Webster or Perrin Tisserand, while high fantasy can carry Aelindra Moonthread or Brunna Ironshuttle.
  • One craft word per name is enough. Hesper Warpwell reads as a weaver; a name with loom, shuttle and thread all in it reads as a joke.
  • Use guild rank to show standing. An apprentice, a journeyman and a master weaver are three different NPCs, and a warden or searcher who inspects cloth makes a ready source of trouble.
  • Give the weaver a specialty such as linen, wool, silk, tapestry or sailcloth. It tells players what they can buy and who the weaver's customers are.
  • Pair a person with a place. Name the weaver first, then hang a sign like The Golden Shuttle or Warp and Weft Hall over the door.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good name for a weaver NPC in D&D?

Start with the character's people and add one craft element. A human villager might be Maud Webster or Maud the Patient, a dwarf Brunna Ironshuttle, a halfling Tobin Bobbinbrook and a gnome Fizwick Cogshuttle. If the search is for a weaver of magic or fate, names like Ysolde Fateweaver and Isaura the Dream Weaver fit an oracle or a patron.

Why are Webster, Webb and Weber surnames?

They are occupational names. Old English called a weaver a webba and a woman who wove a webbestre, which gave Webb, Webber and Webster once surnames became hereditary. German Weber, French Tisserand and Spanish Tejedor formed the same way from each language's word for weaver.

What do warp, weft, heddle and selvedge mean?

The warp is the set of threads held lengthwise on the loom and the weft is the thread that crosses it. Heddles lift chosen warp threads so the shuttle can pass through with the weft, and the selvedge is the firm edge where the weft turns back. These words are the raw material for surnames such as Ansel Loomwright and Hesper Warpwell.

Are the mythic weavers in the list real figures?

They are figures of myth, folklore and literature, not inventions of this page: each has a label in parentheses that says where it comes from, for example Arachne (Greek myth) or Neith (Egyptian goddess of weaving). Every other character on the page is invented or built from a real trade surname, and none is presented as a historical person.
