Generate merchant names for fantasy NPCs, historical fiction and tabletop campaigns: medieval English traders with occupational surnames, Venetian and Hanseatic trading families, Silk Road and Indian Ocean merchants, halfling and gnome shopkeepers, nicknamed market-stall sellers and the trading houses they run.

About merchant names

Merchant names work best when the surname hints at the trade. English is full of occupational surnames left behind by real medieval dealers: Mercer (cloth), Chapman (travelling seller), Draper, Spicer, Chandler, Vintner, Salter, Glover and Hosier, plus Badger and Huckster for the itinerant types. Fantasy settings push the same idea further with invented money-and-goods surnames like Silverpenny, Farthingale, Goldhand, Ledger and Weighscale, which tell a player exactly who the NPC is before a word of dialogue.

Historical merchant cultures add colour of their own. Venetian and Florentine trading families carried grand patrician names (Vendramini, Frescobaldi, Salviati), the Hanseatic League was run by men called Tideman, Hinrich and Everhard with Low German surnames, and Dutch Golden Age traders used patronymics like Claes Pietersz Koopman, where Koopman literally means merchant. On the Silk Road and Indian Ocean the trade shows up in titles and epithets: Persian Bazargan and Arabic al-Tajir both mean merchant, Seth and Shah marked Indian trading castes, and Swahili coast merchants went by Bwana and Nakhoda (ship-owner).

The list mixes all of these with halfling, gnome, dwarf and elf shopkeepers for D&D, nicknamed stall-holders like Marta Two-Coins and Hob Greenapple, and a handful of trading-house names so you can name both the merchant and the company painted on the wagon.

How to choose merchant names

  • Match the name to the scale of the business: a market-stall seller is Nell Lavendar or Hob Greenapple, a town shopkeeper is Godwin Chapman or Alys Coinwell, and the head of a trading house is Niccolò Vendramini or Hinrich Kröger.
  • Use an occupational or goods surname when the player needs to remember what the NPC sells (Walter Spicer, Edith Draper, Dorrin Goldvein); use a plain family name for a merchant whose trade is a plot point you want to reveal later.
  • Nicknames and epithets are the fastest way to make a minor merchant memorable: Old Fennick the Spice-Seller, Ulla Three-Bales or Varrick Sixfingers need no further description.
  • For travelling or foreign traders, borrow from a real trade route to signal where they came from: a Hanseatic name in a northern port, an al-Tajir or Bazargan in a desert caravanserai, a Koopman or van Hoorn on the docks.
  • Pair the merchant with a company name built from their surname (Silverpenny Imports, Thistlewaite & Daughters, House Varrano Trading Company) so signage, ledgers and rivals in your story all point back to the same family.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good fantasy merchant name?

A friendly, slightly old-fashioned given name paired with a surname that nods at money, goods or weighing: Bartholomew Quill, Ysolde Penniwick, Jasper Weighscale. Halflings and gnomes get cosier names (Wilba Tealeaf, Fendrel Copperpot), dwarves get metal-and-coin names (Thora Silverledger), and a cunning or shady dealer suits a nickname like Varrick Sixfingers or Kreth the Hoarder.

Can I use these for D&D shopkeepers and traders?

Yes. The list was built with tabletop NPCs in mind and covers human, halfling, gnome, dwarf, elf and tiefling merchants, plus caravan masters, money-changers and market sellers. Pick a name, attach one of the trading-house names for their business, and you have a complete NPC for a shop scene.

Are these historically accurate merchant names?

The historical entries use real naming conventions from trading cultures such as medieval England, Renaissance Venice and Florence, the Hanseatic League, the Dutch Republic, Safavid Persia, the Abbasid Middle East, Ming and Qing China, Mughal India, Edo Japan and the Swahili coast, but the individuals are invented. Famous real merchants and banking dynasties have been deliberately left out.

Which surnames literally mean merchant?

Quite a few: Mercer and Chapman in English, Kaufmann and Krämer in German, Koopman in Dutch, Marchand and Mercier in French, Kupiec in Polish, Trgovac in Croatian, Bazargan in Persian, al-Tajir in Arabic, Seth in Hindi and Kaupmann in Old Norse. Several appear in the list for exactly that reason.
