Shopkeeper Name Generator

A shopkeeper is the NPC players talk to most and remember least, so the name has to work hard in two words. The convention in tabletop and video-game writing is a plain, pronounceable given name attached to a surname that sounds like it belongs to a trade family: Tobias Fenwick, Margery Cobb, Ambrose Tilbury. Occupational and place-based English surnames (Chandler, Cooper, Tallow, Saltmarsh, Mossbank) do this automatically, which is why so many fantasy merchants sound like they stepped out of a Tudor market town.

Race and region shift the formula. Halfling shopkeepers get soft, botanical names such as Posy Underbough or Tully Honeyfoot; dwarven traders carry ledger-and-metal surnames like Brunna Coppervein or Thorgrim Coinpurse; gnomish tinkers lean into Fizzlewick Tumbleton territory; elven dealers in rare goods sound older and smoother, as in Sylvaine Oriel. A port city or caravan town should also stock merchants with Arabic, East Asian, Slavic, Iberian or West African names so the bazaar feels like a crossroads rather than one village.

The final touch is how the town refers to them. Old Mab, Widow Pennick, Honest Jory and One-Eyed Pell are what locals actually say, and a formal listing such as Cressida Wrayburn, Milliner reads like a guild register or shop sign. Mix all three registers across a town and no two counters will feel the same.
