Generate job names and occupation titles for characters, games, worksheets, writing prompts and icebreakers: real-world careers from the trades to medicine and tech, plus historical, fantasy, sci-fi and delightfully odd jobs.

About job names

A job name does more for a character than almost any other single detail. Tell a reader someone is a Court Stenographer, a Saturation Diver or a Knocker-Upper and they immediately picture a daily routine, a set of tools, a social class and a few opinions. That is why writers, game masters, teachers and improv hosts reach for random occupations: a specific job is a shortcut to a specific person. Generic labels like office worker or scientist do none of that work, so this list favors precise titles over broad ones.

Real job titles follow patterns worth knowing. Trades and crafts are usually a single noun (Farrier, Glazier, Cooper), often from an old verb for the work. Modern roles stack a domain onto a function (Wind Turbine Technician, Revenue Operations Analyst), and corporate ladders add seniority words like Senior, Lead, Head of and Chief. Historical jobs survive as surnames (Fletcher, Thatcher, Mercer), which makes them handy for period fiction, while fantasy and sci-fi jobs are just familiar structures with new nouns: Golem Mechanic, Cryosleep Technician. The list also covers great-house staff, sailing-ship crews, frontier jobs and church and civic offices.

When you draw a job, let it shape the rest of the character: their schedule, their vocabulary, who they complain about and what they notice first in a room.

How to choose job names

  • For character work, pick the more specific title over the broad one; Forensic Entomologist suggests scenes and dialogue that Scientist never will.
  • Match the era and setting: trade nouns and surname-jobs for medieval or historical fiction, domain-plus-function titles for modern drama, familiar structures with new nouns for sci-fi.
  • For classroom or ESL worksheets, mix levels: a few everyday jobs students know, several they can guess from the words, and one or two surprising ones to spark questions.
  • Use odd real jobs (Odor Judge, Golf Ball Diver, Chicken Sexer) as icebreakers and improv prompts; the reaction is the point, and they are all genuine occupations.
  • Write the job into the character's habits, not just their bio line: a Night Auditor keeps different hours, a Farrier has different hands, a Customs Broker notices different details.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real jobs?

Most are real occupations you can find in job listings or labor statistics, including unusual ones like Leech Collector historically and Odor Judge today. A smaller share are historical trades, fantasy roles and plausible future jobs, clearly recognizable by their setting, so you can use the list for both realistic and speculative projects.

What can I use a random job generator for?

Fleshing out fiction and tabletop characters, populating NPCs in games, writing prompts, drama and improv exercises, ESL and career-day worksheets, icebreakers, and party games like guess-the-job or charades. It is also a quick way to brainstorm careers you had not considered.

How are job titles usually structured?

Single-noun titles (Tailor, Sawyer, Midwife) are common for old trades and professions; compound titles attach a specialty or domain to a role (Pediatric Nurse, Structural Engineer); and corporate titles add a level such as Senior, Lead, Director or Chief. Knowing the pattern lets you invent believable titles for any setting.

Can I use these job names in a published game or book?

Yes. Job titles are descriptive terms and are not owned by anyone, so you can use real, historical and invented occupations freely in fiction, games, worksheets and apps.
