Sheriff Name Generator

A sheriff's name has to carry authority in a single breath, because that is how it gets used: shouted across a street, printed on a ballot, carved on a badge. Classic Western lawmen tend to have short, hard first names (Cole, Wyatt, Hank, Jeb) or old Biblical ones (Josiah, Ezra, Hezekiah, Obadiah) paired with an English, Scots-Irish or German surname that sounds like it belongs to a farm or a county: Holloway, Brannigan, Whitlock, Tolliver. In the Southwest the same job was held by men named Ortega, Ybarra and Trujillo, and across the Territories by Black and Native lawmen whose names are just as much part of the tradition.

Modern sheriffs are elected officials, so their names sound like a neighbor's: Dale Hendricks, Joanna Reyes, Darnell Whitmore, Karen Yazzie. The generator includes plenty of these alongside the frontier names, as well as a handful of nicknamed legends (Tom 'Catfish' Hadley, 'Iron' Ike Sorrells) for characters whose reputation precedes them.

Choose by era and region first. A Territorial New Mexico sheriff in 1885 is probably a Lucero or a Gallegos; a Montana sheriff in 1990 is more likely a Halvorsen; a Georgia county sheriff today might be a Pinckney or a Satterwhite. Matching the surname to the place is the fastest way to make the character feel real.
