Generate weasel names for story characters, tabletop vermin, game pets and mascots: quick names like Slink and Quickpaw, hedgerow names like Nettle and Bramble, winter ermine names like Snowdrift and Blacktip, and rogue names like Snatch and Filch.

About weasel names

The least weasel is the smallest of the mustelids, and the best weasel names sound the way the animal moves: short, quick and a little sly. Slink, Whisk, Jink and Quickpaw fit the bounding body, while hedgerow words such as Nettle, Bramble, Teasel and Drystone place the animal where it lives, along walls, ditches and field margins. Stoats, minks, polecats and martens are covered too.

A stoat in its white winter coat is called an ermine, and it keeps the black tip of its tail, which is where names like Blacktip, Inktip and Snowcoat come from. The same fur gave heraldry one of its patterns, white with black spots, so the noble names here borrow from blazon: Erminois, Pean, Lady Whitecoat, Duke of the Drystone Wall. In animal fantasy the weasel is usually a rogue or a soldier in somebody's horde, so there are thieves (Snatch, Filch, Cutpurse) and ranked vermin (Captain Grimsnout, Sergeant Rattlefang) for your own stories.

The rest is lighter: names for kits, long-body jokes, puns on the nursery rhyme 'Pop Goes the Weasel', species and Latin words such as Mustela and Nivalis, and the word for weasel in other languages, from Itachi to Belette. Weasels are wild animals in most places, so most of these names will end up on characters, mascots and game pets.

How to choose weasel names

  • Pick the animal first. A stoat or ermine suits winter and tail-tip names (Blacktip, Snowcoat, Turncoat), a tiny least weasel suits small names (Thimble, Tuck, Titch), and a mink or marten can carry something sleeker such as Sable Brush or Silkpelt.
  • Keep it short for a quick animal. One or two syllables with a hard stop (Slink, Jink, Whisk, Snatch) read as fast; save the long titles like Marquess of the Molehills for comic effect.
  • For a villain's horde, give most soldiers a plain rough name (Ragclaw, Bentwhisker, Ashpelt) and keep ranks for the few who matter, such as Captain Grimsnout or Quartermaster Dregg.
  • If you use a word from another language, check what else it means there before you commit. Belette, Wiesel, Comadreja and Donnola are simply the everyday word for weasel in French, German, Spanish and Italian.
  • Say the name the way a narrator would: 'Nettle slipped under the gate.' If it trips the sentence, try the shorter one.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for a weasel?

Short, quick names suit a weasel best: Slink, Whisk, Jink, Quickpaw, Nettle, Bramble and Tuck are all in the list. For a rogue in a story try Snatch, Filch or Light Fingers, and for a joke about the long body try Sock With Legs or Mostly Neck.

What is the difference between a weasel, a stoat and an ermine?

A stoat is a larger relative of the least weasel with a black tip to its tail, and in North America it is often called the short-tailed weasel. Ermine is the name for a stoat in its white winter coat, and for the fur itself. Names such as Blacktip, Snowcoat, Changecoat and Ermine Trim come from that seasonal change.

Which names are the word for weasel in other languages?

Itachi is Japanese, Belette is French, Wiesel is German, Comadreja is Spanish, Donnola is Italian and Laska is Russian. The list also has words for the stoat, such as Hermine and Okojo, and for martens, minks and polecats, plus Latin species words like Mustela, Nivalis and Erminea.

Are the soldier and captain names taken from a book?

They are not meant to be. Names such as Captain Grimsnout, Sergeant Rattlefang and Scout Thornwhisker follow the animal-fantasy manner for your own stories and tabletop games, and none is offered as a canon character. A match with a published character is still possible, so if you write fan fiction, look through your setting's own cast before you settle on one.
