Find a name for a nudibranch or any other sea slug, whether it is a plush sea bunny, an aquarium mascot or a character of your own, from Ruffles, Highlighter and Sherbet to Glaucus, Sir Slugsworth and His Royal Frilliness.

About nudibranch names

Nudibranchs are shell-less sea slugs, and almost everything people name them for is on show: neon colors, stripes and spots, a pair of scent-sensing horns called rhinophores, and either a feathery plume of gills on the back or rows of finger-like cerata. That is why so many names here lean on paint, frills and fabric, with Highlighter, Tie-Dye, Ruffles, Tassel and Flamenco next to sweet-shop names like Sherbet and Ribbon Candy.

A second group borrows from the animals themselves. Spanish Dancer, Blue Dragon and Sea Bunny are common names of real nudibranchs, while Leaf Sheep and Lettuce Sea Slug belong to a different group of sea slugs that feed on algae. Glaucus, Doris and Chromodoris are genus names that happen to sound like pet names, and Rhino is short for those horns. The rest is play: slug puns such as Sir Slugsworth and Slug Life, grand titles for a thumb-sized animal, fantasy names for original characters, and names from reefs and well-known dive spots.

Many nudibranchs are specialist feeders that eat only one kind of prey, and most do poorly in home aquariums. These 1,000 names are meant as much for plush toys, public aquarium mascots, dive-log favorites, drawings and game characters as for living animals.

How to choose nudibranch names

  • Name the look first. A spotted or patterned animal suits Polka Dot, Harlequin or Tie-Dye, and a frilly one suits Ruffles, Flounce or Petticoat.
  • For a plush sea bunny the rabbit names fit: Bunbun, Cottontail, Dust Bunny or Honey Bun. For a leaf sheep, try Leafy Lamb, Clover Lamb or Salad Sheep.
  • A long title is funnier with a short call name. His Royal Frilliness can be Frill for every day, and Countess Frillington can be Tess.
  • Names such as Spanish Shawl, Sea Lemon and Hopkins' Rose are common names of real sea slugs. Look the species up yourself before you put one on a label or a photo caption.
  • Enjoy wild nudibranchs where they live. Most have narrow diets and do not last in home tanks, so give the name to a photo, a dive-log entry, a toy or a character instead.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for a nudibranch?

Names that describe what you see work best: Highlighter, Confetti and Opal for color, or Ruffles, Plume and Antlers for the gills and horns. Sweet names such as Sherbet and Cotton Candy Curl suit the pastel ones, and Sir Slugsworth or Slug Life cover the jokes.

Is a sea bunny a nudibranch?

Yes. The sea bunny is a small dorid nudibranch, and its "ears" are rhinophores, the scent organs on a nudibranch's head. The blue dragon and the Spanish dancer are nudibranchs too, while the leaf sheep and the lettuce sea slug are sea slugs of another group, so "sea slug" is the safe word when you are not sure.

Can I keep a nudibranch as a pet?

It is rarely a good idea. Many species eat a single kind of sponge, hydroid or other prey that is hard to supply, and most do not live long in home aquariums. The names here work just as well for plush toys, mascots, drawings and characters.

Are the animal names in the list real?

Part of the list uses common names and genus names of real sea slugs, such as Spanish Dancer, Sea Lemon, Glaucus and Chromodoris. They are mixed with reef neighbors such as Sea Fan and Feather Star, pet names, puns, titles and fantasy names, so treat the list as name ideas and not as a field guide.
