Brian Jacques gave every species in Mossflower its own naming voice, so you can hear who a character is before you see them. Abbey mice and the peaceful woodlanders carry soft, homely names: Matthias, Cornflower, Columbine, Tansy, Mariel. Moles get earthy, clipped names like Dinny, Gurrbowl and Drunn Tunneller, and the senior mole is always Foremole. Otters go by watery surnames (Streambattle, Galedeep, Wavedog, Shellhound) under a Skipper, and shrews follow a Log-a-Log. Hares of the Long Patrol are gloriously overwritten: Tamello De Fformelo Tussock, Beau Fethringsol Cosfortingham, Dorothea Duckfontein Dillworthy, usually shortened to Tammo, Beau and Dotti. Badger lords and ladies bear a deed or an epithet, such as Boar the Fighter, Sunflash the Mace, Cregga Rose Eyes, Russano the Wise.

Vermin sound the opposite: hard consonants, hisses and growls. Cluny the Scourge, Slagar the Cruel, Ferahgo the Assassin, Ungatt Trunn, Gabool the Wild, Vilu Daskar. Searats and corsairs get salty one-word names like Greypatch, Saltar, Romsca and Badredd; ferrets, stoats and weasels get names with claws in them. The titles Abbot, Abbess, Brother, Sister, Friar and Cellarhog mark Redwall's own, and young ones are Dibbuns. This list mixes canon characters with original names that follow each species' pattern, for OCs, fan fiction or tabletop woodlanders.
