Otter Name Generator

Otter names tend to land in one of a few registers. The cute-pet register leans on soft, round sounds and snack words: Ollie, Pip, Biscuit, Noodle, Mochi. The splashy register borrows from water itself: Ripple, Puddle, Eddy, Bubbles, Splash. Because otters crack shellfish on their bellies and juggle pebbles, seafood and rock names like Clam, Urchin, Kelp, Scallop and Pebble are a running joke that never gets old. River otters, with their restless scampering, also pull in rascal names such as Scamp, Bandit and Mischief.

There is a literary tradition too. Henry Williamson's Tarka the Otter is set on the Torridge and Taw in Devon, Gavin Maxwell's Ring of Bright Water gave us Mij, Edal and Teko on the Scottish coast, Portly is the lost otter cub in The Wind in the Willows, and Jim Henson's Emmet Otter has his own jug band. Aquarium sea otters have their own naming habits, usually Alaskan and Californian place names or Indigenous-language words: Katmai, Sitka, Tanu, Selka, Rosa.

Pick something short and bright for a pup, something old-fashioned like Humphrey or Ottilie for a dignified elder, and matching pairs like Peanut and Jelly for a raft of two.
