Raccoon names almost always play on the mask. The black band across a raccoon's eyes makes it look like a burglar, so Bandit, Rascal, Zorro, Robber, Outlaw and Sneaky Pete are the classic picks, and the internet's 'trash panda' nickname has added a whole family of dumpster and snack names: Trash Panda, Binny, Scraps, Cheeto, Pretzel, Marshmallow. Their ringed tail gives Ringtail, Ringo and Stripes; their habit of dunking food in water gives Washer, Dabbler and Sudsy; and their nocturnal prowling gives Midnight, Dusk and Prowler.

Famous raccoons are a rich source too. Rocket (Guardians of the Galaxy), Meeko (Pocahontas), Sly Cooper, Rigby (Regular Show), RJ (Over the Hedge), Ranger Rick, Rocky Raccoon from the Beatles song and the Nook family from Animal Crossing (technically tanuki, but everyone counts them). The scientific name Procyon lotor, Spanish mapache, German Waschbär and the Powhatan word arakun (origin of 'raccoon') give options that sound clever without being obvious.

Because raccoons are woodland animals in most of North America, tree and campfire names — Hickory, Acorn, Maple, Bramble, S'mores — fit them naturally, and the current fashion for giving animals very ordinary human names (Gary, Barbara, Kevin, Frank) suits a raccoon's deadpan expression perfectly.
