1,000 echidna names for a plush toy, a mascot, a storybook character or an animal in care: snout names like Snufflebeak, diggers like Burrowdown, curl-up names like Tuck and Roll, puggle names like Pouchling, and bush names from Wattlebark to Tumbarumba.

About echidna names

An echidna is one of only five living monotremes, the mammals that lay eggs: the platypus, the short-beaked echidna found across Australia and in New Guinea, and three long-beaked echidnas of New Guinea. The mother lays a single egg into her pouch, it hatches in about ten days, and the baby, called a puggle, stays there until its spines begin to grow. Adults have no teeth, only a beak-like snout and a long sticky tongue for ants and termites.

Those facts shape the 1,000 names here. The snout gives Snufflebeak, Quick Tongue and Soil Sniffer. An echidna that feels threatened digs straight down or curls into a ball, which gives Burrowdown, Gone to Ground, Tuck and Roll and Curl-Up Kev. The pouch and the egg give Little Pouch, Pouchling, One Egg Wonder and Monotreme Dream, and the diet gives Termite Tim and Mound Muncher.

The rest is home and humor. There are Australian plants and towns (Wattlebark, Geebung, Tumbarumba), New Guinea names for the long-beaked species (the genus name Zaglossus, the Foja Mountains, and Bilum, the Tok Pisin word for a string bag), mock titles such as Dame Spinifex and Lord Burrowmere, pairs like Dig & Delve, and a short nod to the Echidna of Greek myth, the mother of monsters the animal is named after.

How to choose echidna names

  • Start from the trait you like best: Snufflebeak for the snout, Burrowdown for the digging, Tuck and Roll for the ball, Pouchling for a baby.
  • For a plush toy or a small child's character, the soft names read best: Snugglebur, Pocket Prickle, Puggle Dumpling, Button Beak.
  • A plant or place name is a quiet choice for a story set in the bush. Say a long one such as Tumbarumba or Yackandandah out loud before you commit, and check the spelling before it goes on a sign or a book cover.
  • For a pair, use a ready-made one such as Dig & Delve or Tachy & Zag, or take two names from one strand: Topsoil and Dug In, Wattlebark and Geebung.
  • Echidnas are protected wild animals in Australia, not pets. If one turns up in the garden, leave it alone and let it move on. The names here are for toys, mascots, characters and animals in professional care.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for an echidna?

The ones built on what makes an echidna an echidna: the snout, the digging and the egg. Snufflebeak, Burrowdown, One Egg Wonder, Monotreme Dream and Ed Kidna are all in this list, next to bush names such as Wattlebark and Geebung. For a grander animal, try Dame Spinifex or Sir Digby Downward.

What is a baby echidna called?

A puggle. The mother lays one egg into her pouch, the egg hatches after about ten days, and the puggle stays in the pouch until its spines start to come through. After that she leaves it in a burrow and comes back to feed it. Puggle names here include Pouchling, Pocket Puggle, Little Pouch and Puggle Dumpling.

Why is it called an echidna?

The animal is named after Echidna, a creature of Greek myth who was half woman, half snake and the mother of monsters such as Cerberus and the Hydra. The list keeps that to a handful of names, among them Mother of Monsters and Not That Echidna. Tachyglossus, the scientific name of the short-beaked echidna, means quick tongue, and both Tachyglossus and Quick Tongue are in the list.

Are there names for long-beaked echidnas?

Yes. The short-beaked echidna lives across Australia and in New Guinea and eats mostly ants and termites, so its names lean on Australian plants, towns and termite mounds. The three long-beaked species live in New Guinea and eat mainly earthworms, which is why the list has Zaglossus, Longbeak, Worm Whisperer and highland names such as Foja and Arfak.
