About weapon shop names

A weapon shop in a fantasy town is named the way real medieval trades were. The most common form is the hanging sign: customers who could not read found the shop by its painted board, which is why so many armories are called The Crossed Blades, The Notched Axe or The Quiet Quiver. The second form is the owner and the trade, as in Hadrick Vane, Bladesmith or Thistlewood & Daughters, Bowyers, which says at once that the place is old, family-run and proud of its work. The third is a place name plus a trade word (Ironvale Arms, Northgate Arsenal), which suits a larger outfitter supplying a garrison rather than one adventurer.

The trade words carry real distinctions. A bladesmith forges blades, a cutler finishes and sells them, a bowyer makes bows, a fletcher makes arrows, an armourer works plate and mail, and an arsenal or armory stores arms for a fighting force. Gunsmiths and powder sellers belong to later eras and fit steampunk, Western or modern game settings; plasma, railgun and orbital depots are the sci-fi equivalent.

The list covers all of these, plus dwarven, elven and orcish smithies, dark-alley dagger dealers, second-hand steel resellers, siege-engine yards and pun names for lighter campaigns, so you can stock a whole market street or name the one store your players keep returning to.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the name to the customer: The Sellsword's Friend or Rogue's Rack suits an adventurer town, while Northgate Arsenal or Quartermaster's Stores suits a city that equips soldiers.
  • Use the trade word correctly; a shop called a fletchery that sells swords will bother players who know the difference, but a general Arms & Armour sign covers everything.
  • Give the proprietor a name and a specialty (Ysolde Kett, Knifemaker) so the shop becomes an NPC hook instead of a menu screen.
  • Sign-style names (The Bent Pommel, The Rusted Buckler) hint at a story: let the broken or rusted object on the sign have a history the owner will tell for a drink.
  • For a video game shop, keep it to two or three words that fit a map label and a storefront sign, and avoid apostrophes that break in UI fonts.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good name for a weapon shop in D&D?

Pick one of the three classic forms: a sign name like The Whetted Edge, an owner-and-trade name like Marrick Holt, Swordwright, or a place-and-trade name like Blackwater Armory. Owner names give the DM a ready-made NPC; sign names work best when the sign itself is memorable.

What's the difference between an armory, an arsenal and a smithy?

A smithy is where weapons are forged, an armory is where they are stored or sold, and an arsenal originally meant a large state-owned store or workshop for military arms. In fantasy shop names they are used loosely, but the words still set the scale: a smithy is one craftsman, an arsenal is an institution.

Do these names work for gun stores or sci-fi weapon shops?

Yes. Alongside the medieval and fantasy names the list includes gunsmith and powder-era names (Flintlock and Fuse, Brass and Powder Outfitters), modern tactical names (Hardpoint Arms, Caliber and Company) and futuristic ones (Railgun Row, Orbital Arms Depot) for cyberpunk, space opera and wasteland settings.

Can I use one of these names for a real business?

The names here are original and free to use, but check trademarks and business registries in your region before putting one on a storefront, since generic phrases like Arms and Armour are likely already in use somewhere.
