Generate fantasy shop names for the whole market street: apothecaries, blacksmiths, wandmakers, curio dealers, fletchers, and general stores, styled like Ollivanders, Diagon Alley storefronts, and real medieval guild shops. Ideal for D&D towns, worldbuilding, and themed Etsy or game shops.
About fantasy shop names
Real medieval and early-modern shops were named one of three ways, and fantasy has kept all three. The first is the proprietor's name plus trade: Ollivanders is literally the Ollivander family's wand shop, and Thistlewick's Apothecary or Tobias Flint, Locksmith follow suit. The second is the sign: like inns, shops hung a painted board, so The Green Bottle is an apothecary, The Bent Nail a smithy, The Owl and Ink a scrivener. The third is the trade itself, often in a word we've half forgotten: fletcher, cordwainer, chandler, cooper, whitesmith, draper, glazier.
A good fantasy shop name tells the customer what's inside and hints at who runs it. Grimwald & Sons suggests an old, respectable business; Silas Grubb, Purveyor of Oddities suggests one strange man; The Shop That Wasn't There Yesterday tells you it's enchanted before you open the door. Naming a shop for its trade rather than for "magic" also makes a market street feel populated: an adventurer's town needs a fletcher, a cooper and a fence as much as it needs a wandmaker.
The list covers apothecaries, smithies, bookshops, curio dealers, jewellers, outfitters, general stores and genuinely magical emporiums, so you can stock a whole town in one pass or find one memorable name for a novel or a themed real-world store.
Tips for choosing a name
- Name shops for the trade first and the magic second; a town with a fletcher, a chandler and a herbwife feels real, and one wandmaker among them stands out more.
- Use the proprietor form (Hettie Moss, Herbwife) when you want an NPC to walk out from behind the counter; use the sign form (The Blue Bottle) when the shop itself is the character.
- Vary the grammar across a street: '& Sons', 'The X and Y', a bare surname with a trade, and one long whimsical name (The Shop at the End of the Lane) keep a shopping district from sounding like a list.
- For a themed Etsy shop or game store, pick a short sign-style name that works as a logo (The Raven's Quill, The Brass Cog) and check the handle is free.
- Decide what the shop won't sell. 'The Third Shelf' or 'The Forbidden Shelf' implies restricted stock and gives players a reason to come back with more gold or better persuasion rolls.
Frequently asked questions
How are fantasy shops usually named?
Three patterns cover almost every one: owner's name plus trade (Ollivanders, Thistlewick's Apothecary), a sign-style name that describes the painted board over the door (The Green Bottle, The Bent Nail), or the trade itself using old guild words like fletcher, cooper, chandler, and draper.
What kinds of shops should a fantasy town have?
At minimum a general store or trading post, a smithy, an apothecary or herbwife, and somewhere to sell loot such as a pawnbroker or fence. Larger towns add a bookseller or scrivener, a jeweller, an outfitter for adventurers, and specialist magic shops like a wandmaker or enchanter.
Can I use these shop names for a real store or an Etsy shop?
The original names here are free for real businesses, fiction, and games, including commercial use. Ollivanders and a few other famous names are included only as examples of the naming convention and are trademarked, so don't use those commercially.
Should a magic shop have 'magic' in the name?
Usually not. In a world where magic is ordinary, the shop is simply Ashcombe & Daughters, Wandwrights, the way a real bakery doesn't call itself 'Bread Store'. Save overtly magical names (The Shop That Wasn't There Yesterday) for shops that are unusual even by the setting's standards.
