Astronomers have found candidate ocean worlds such as Kepler-22b, GJ 1214b and TOI-1452b, super-Earths whose density suggests they may be covered in water hundreds of kilometres deep. Within our own system, Europa, Enceladus and Ganymede hide global oceans under ice and are the closest thing to water worlds we know.

Real astronomy names moons and features after classical mythology, so Greek and Latin sea names (Oceanus, Thalassa, Tethys, Nereid, Triton, Amphitrite) feel official and scientific. Using them signals that your setting follows real naming conventions; using a non-Western sea deity instead signals a different dominant culture in your future.

Settlements on an ocean world are usually platforms, atolls or seabed cities, so names like Skyreef, Kelpstead, Anchorage or Moonpool work for habitats, while the few seas and currents can take descriptive names (The Long Swell, Gyre, Sargasso) or the names of the ships and captains who first crossed them.
