About Victorian house names

Naming houses became a middle-class habit in the Victorian era. Before 1850 only country seats and farms had names; then the railways filled the suburbs with villas, and every new owner wanted something to paint on the gatepost that said this was not just number 14. The names they chose fall into a few recognisable groups. Trees and shrubs in the front garden gave The Laurels, The Limes, Hollybank and Laburnum Villa. Romantic landscape and the Lake District gave Fernleigh, Glenhurst, Braeside, Windermere and Rydal Mount, while Walter Scott's novels supplied Waverley, Ivanhoe, Kenilworth and Abbotsford.

Patriotism and the news supplied the rest. Battles were carved into hundreds of lintels, so Alma, Inkerman and Sebastopol date a house to the 1850s, Khartoum and Gordon to the 1880s, and Ladysmith and Mafeking to 1900. Royal names (Albert, Osborne, Balmoral, Alexandra, Jubilee) and statesmen (Gladstone, Peel, Beaconsfield) were equally popular, and returning colonists named houses for Simla, Lucknow or Melbourne. The building word matters too: Villa was the aspirational suburban term, Lodge and Cottage suggested a gentleman's retreat, and names ending in -hurst, -dene, -leigh, -mount or -holme were coined purely for their genteel sound.

How to choose Victorian house names

  • Date the house first. A villa of the 1850s suits Alma, Inkerman or Balaclava; one from the 1860s to 1880s suits Osborne, Gladstone or Khartoum; a terrace of 1897 to 1902 suits Jubilee, Ladysmith or Mafeking.
  • If the property is real, check the 1881 or 1891 census and old Ordnance Survey maps: many Victorian houses still have their original name recorded, and reinstating it is more satisfying than inventing one.
  • Match the building word to the house. Villa for a detached or semi-detached suburban house, Lodge for something at a gate or on an estate, Cottage only for a small house, and House or The Laurels-style names for anything larger.
  • Coined names (Fernleigh, Hazeldene, Rosemount, Sunnyholme) are the safest for a fictional street because they were hugely common and carry no baggage; battle and colonial names make a stronger statement about the owner's politics.
  • For a Victorian novel or game, give neighbouring houses names from different groups, as a real street would mix The Hollies, Albert Villa, Mon Repos and Glen Cottage side by side.
