Victorian House Name Generator

Naming houses became a middle-class habit in the Victorian era. Before 1850 only country seats and farms had names; then the railways filled the suburbs with villas, and every new owner wanted something to paint on the gatepost that said this was not just number 14. The names they chose fall into a few recognisable groups. Trees and shrubs in the front garden gave The Laurels, The Limes, Hollybank and Laburnum Villa. Romantic landscape and the Lake District gave Fernleigh, Glenhurst, Braeside, Windermere and Rydal Mount, while Walter Scott's novels supplied Waverley, Ivanhoe, Kenilworth and Abbotsford.

Patriotism and the news supplied the rest. Battles were carved into hundreds of lintels, so Alma, Inkerman and Sebastopol date a house to the 1850s, Khartoum and Gordon to the 1880s, and Ladysmith and Mafeking to 1900. Royal names (Albert, Osborne, Balmoral, Alexandra, Jubilee) and statesmen (Gladstone, Peel, Beaconsfield) were equally popular, and returning colonists named houses for Simla, Lucknow or Melbourne. The building word matters too: Villa was the aspirational suburban term, Lodge and Cottage suggested a gentleman's retreat, and names ending in -hurst, -dene, -leigh, -mount or -holme were coined purely for their genteel sound.
