About Venezuelan last names

Venezuelans carry two surnames, the father's first and then the mother's first, so each entry here is one half of a full name: Briceño Uzcátegui, Marcano Lárez, Finol Villasmil. The Spanish core is in the list, with González, Rodríguez, Pérez, Hernández and García at the front, but most of the 500 are the names that place a family on the map.

Urdaneta, Bracho, Boscán, Finol and Villasmil belong to Maracaibo and Zulia. Uzcátegui, Dugarte, Pernía and Belandria come from the Andean states, Graterol, Guédez, Querales and Camacaro from Lara and the plains, Chirinos, Guanipa and Zárraga from Falcón, and Marcano, Lárez, Malavé and Suniaga from Margarita and the eastern coast. Basque families of the colonial period left Anzoátegui, Arismendi and Aristeguieta, and settlers from the Canary Islands brought Betancourt, Oramas and Ascanio.

Later arrivals added their own layers. Portuguese families, many from Madeira, are behind De Freitas, De Sousa, Dos Santos and Goncalves, usually written without the cedilla. Corsican traders on the Paria coast left Pietri, Raffalli and Franceschi, Italian families left Carnevali and Spinetti, the German settlers of Colonia Tovar left Breidenbach and Muttach, and Syrian and Lebanese families left Saab and Haddad. Wayuu clan names such as Epieyú, Uriana and Pushaina, passed down through the mother's line, complete the list. Accents are kept as Venezuelans write them.

How to choose Venezuelan last names

  • Give a Venezuelan character two surnames, the father's first and then the mother's first: Urdaneta Boscán, Graterol Guédez, Marcano Lárez. In daily life most people use the first one alone.
  • Match the surname to the region. Finol, Villasmil and Atencio suit Maracaibo, Uzcátegui, Dugarte and Pernía suit Mérida and Táchira, Querales and Camacaro suit Barquisimeto, and Marcano, Lárez and Marval suit Margarita.
  • Keep the accents and the ñ in a Venezuelan setting: Uzcátegui, Anzoátegui, Briceño, Guédez. Drop them only where the story's paperwork would, such as a foreign passport or an old database.
  • Portuguese surnames keep their particle in Venezuela, so write De Freitas, De Sousa, Da Silva and Dos Santos in full and file them under D.
  • Wayuu clan names belong to a living people. Use them for Wayuu characters, and remember that the clan name comes from the mother.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common last names in Venezuela?

González and Rodríguez lead, and Pérez, Hernández, García, Martínez, Sánchez and López are all among the most widespread. They are in this list, together with names that are especially at home in Venezuela, such as Briceño, Graterol, Colmenares, Chirinos and Marcano.

Which last names are typical of Venezuela?

Look for the regional names. Uzcátegui, Urdaneta, Villasmil, Finol, Boscán, Guédez, Chirinos, Querales, Sulbarán and Carrasquel are far more at home in Venezuela than anywhere else, and so are colonial Basque names like Anzoátegui, Aristeguieta and Azpúrua. A surname on its own never proves where a person comes from, but these are the ones a Venezuelan reader will recognize at once.

Why are there Portuguese and Italian surnames in the list?

Large numbers of Portuguese and Italian immigrants settled in Venezuela in the middle of the twentieth century, and their surnames are now part of everyday life there. That is why De Freitas, De Sousa, Ferreira and Da Silva sit beside Carnevali, Delfino and Mazzei. Older arrivals are here too, such as the Corsican families of Carúpano (Pietri, Prosperi, Vicentelli) and the German families of Colonia Tovar (Breidenbach, Muttach, Kanzler).

What are Wayuu last names?

The Wayuu of the Guajira, in Zulia state, belong to clans that are inherited from the mother, and the clan name is used as a surname. The list has five of them in the spelling used in Venezuela: Epieyú, Uriana, Ipuana, Pushaina and Jusayú. Across the border in Colombia some of the same clans are written differently, for example Epiayú.
