About Cuban last names
The most common Cuban surnames are the Castilian ones the whole Spanish-speaking world shares: Rodríguez, Pérez, González, Hernández, García. What makes a surname sound Cuban is everything that came after. Valdés ranks far higher on the island than it does in Spain, partly because Havana's foundling home gave it to the children in its care for generations. Canary Islanders settled the tobacco country and left Betancourt, Bencomo, Arencibia, Oramas and Padrón. Catalan merchants brought Gener, Roig, Martí and Guiteras, Galicians and Asturians brought Piñeiro, Taboada, Menéndez, Argüelles and Fanjul, and Basques brought Zulueta, Iznaga, Aldama and the Echevarría that eastern Cuba spells Hechavarría.
The east has a sound of its own. Families who came from Saint-Domingue after the Haitian Revolution, and Haitian workers who followed in the twentieth century, settled around Santiago and Guantánamo, which is why Despaigne, Duvergel, Durruthy, Lescay and Casamayor are Cuban surnames. Irish families that settled under Spanish rule gave the island Kindelán, O'Farrill, O'Reilly and Duany, and Chinese laborers who began arriving in 1847 added Lam, Wong and Chang.
The list also covers names tied to one province, such as Agramonte, Agüero and Varona in Camagüey or Santiesteban, Proenza and Carralero in Holguín, and the particle surnames Cubans are fond of: De Armas, De la Fe, Del Sol, Montes de Oca.
How to choose Cuban last names
- Give a character on the island two surnames, the father's first and then the mother's first: Sotolongo Arencibia, Despaigne Mustelier, Agüero Varona. In everyday life most people go by the first one.
- Match the surname to the province. Agramonte, Agüero and Loret de Mola suit Camagüey, Santiesteban, Proenza, Verdecia and Rosabal suit Holguín and Granma, Despaigne, Frómeta and Lobaina suit Santiago and Guantánamo, Companioni and Echemendía suit Sancti Spíritus, and Azcuy and Robaina suit Pinar del Río.
- For a Cuban American family, drop the accents the way U.S. paperwork does (Valdes, Hechavarria, Kindelan) or join the two surnames with a hyphen, so Agüero Varona becomes Aguero-Varona.
- Spelling variants are real but a family keeps one. Echevarría and Hechavarría, or Zayas and De Zayas, would not both appear on the same family tree.
- If the name is for a real business, a pen name or a published book, search it yourself first. Many of these surnames belong to thousands of living people, and a few to a single well-known family.
Frequently asked questions
What are the most common Cuban last names?
Rodríguez, Pérez, González, Hernández and García lead, followed by names like Martínez, Díaz, Fernández, López, Álvarez and Valdés. All of them are in this list. Valdés stands out, because it ranks far higher in Cuba than it does in Spain.
Which last names sound distinctly Cuban?
Names that are rare elsewhere but familiar on the island: Sotolongo, Hechavarría, Portuondo, Santiesteban, Carmenate, Chaviano, Companioni, Mustelier and Verdecia, along with Canarian names such as Betancourt and Arencibia. French surnames from the east, like Despaigne and Duvergel, are just as recognizable.
Why does Cuba have French, Irish and Chinese surnames?
They follow the island's migration history. Families from Saint-Domingue settled in the east after the Haitian Revolution, which left names like Duvergel and Lescay. Irish families such as Kindelán and O'Farrill arrived under Spanish rule, and Chinese laborers who came from 1847 on left Lam, Wong, Chang and Chiu.
How do last names work in Cuba?
Cubans carry two surnames, the father's first surname followed by the mother's first surname, and women keep their own surnames after marriage. The children of a Betancourt Oramas father and a Piñeiro Taboada mother are Betancourt Piñeiro. Cubans in the United States often use only the first surname or hyphenate the pair.
