About Colombian last names

Colombians carry two surnames, the father's first and then the mother's first, so a list of single surnames is a box of building blocks: Restrepo Arango, Mosquera Rentería, Forero Buitrago. The Spanish core is here, led by Rodríguez, Gómez, Martínez, González and García, but the regions are where the character lies.

Antioquia and the coffee region are the home of the paisa surnames, many of them Basque in origin: Echeverri, Uribe, Zuluaga, Aristizábal and Saldarriaga, along with Restrepo, Ospina, Londoño, Arango, Jaramillo and Botero. The Caribbean coast adds De la Hoz, Cantillo and Fontalvo, plus names that came with Syrian, Lebanese and Palestinian immigrants from the late nineteenth century on, such as Char, Turbay and Bechara. On the Pacific coast and in northern Cauca you meet Mosquera, Rentería, Palacios and Cuesta beside surnames that record African peoples and places: Carabalí, Lucumí, Mina, Balanta.

Indigenous family names are part of the list too. Wayuu clan names such as Epiayú, Pushaina and Uriana pass through the mother's line in La Guajira, Nasa families in Cauca are called Yule, Pilcué and Ulcué, and Tibaduiza, Neuta and Chiguasuque come from the Muisca highlands around Bogotá. The English surnames of San Andrés and Providencia, like Archbold, Newball and Pomare, close the map. Accents are kept as Colombians write them.

How to choose Colombian last names

  • Give a Colombian character two surnames, the father's first and then the mother's first: Giraldo Henao, Mosquera Rentería, Pinzón Forero. In everyday life most people go by the first one alone.
  • Match the surname to the region. Restrepo, Londoño and Zuluaga suit Medellín or Manizales, De la Hoz, Fontalvo and Charris suit Barranquilla, Forero, Buitrago and Cubillos suit Bogotá and Boyacá, Villamizar, Mantilla and Jaimes suit the Santanders, and Burbano and Rosero suit Pasto.
  • Keep the accents and the ñ in a Colombian setting: Londoño, Atehortúa, Piedrahíta, Rentería. Drop them only where the story's paperwork would, such as a foreign passport or an old database.
  • Wayuu, Nasa, Misak, Inga and Raizal surnames belong to living communities. Use them for characters from those communities, and remember that a Wayuu character carries the mother's clan name.
  • If the name is for a real business, a pen name or a published book, search it yourself first. Thousands of living people share most of these surnames.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common last names in Colombia?

Rodríguez leads, and Gómez, Martínez, González, García, López, Hernández, Sánchez, Ramírez and Pérez are all among the most widespread. They are in this list, together with names that are common in Colombia but much rarer elsewhere, such as Restrepo, Giraldo, Cardona, Osorio and Mosquera.

What is a paisa last name?

Paisa is the everyday word for people from Antioquia and the coffee departments of Caldas, Risaralda and Quindío. Surnames such as Restrepo, Ospina, Londoño, Arango, Echeverri, Zuluaga, Jaramillo, Uribe and Botero cluster there. Many paisa surnames are Basque in origin, which is why they look different from the Castilian names ending in -ez.

Why do Colombians have two last names?

It is the Spanish naming custom. A child takes the father's first surname followed by the mother's first surname, so the children of a Henao Agudelo father and a Tobón Isaza mother are Henao Tobón. Women usually keep their own surnames after marriage.

Are all Colombian surnames Spanish?

No. The list includes Wayuu clan names such as Epiayú, Pushaina and Ipuana, Nasa names such as Yule and Pilcué, and Inga and Kamëntsá names from Putumayo such as Jacanamijoy and Chindoy. It also has surnames of African origin like Carabalí and Lucumí, Levantine names like Char and Turbay, and the English surnames of San Andrés and Providencia, such as Archbold and Huffington.
