Generate realistic South American names drawn from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay, Guyana and Suriname. Spanish, Portuguese, Quechua, Mapuche and Italian-immigrant names paired the way people in each country actually carry them.

About South American names

South America is not one naming culture but a dozen. Nine Spanish-speaking countries share the double-surname system, where a child takes the father's surname first and the mother's second, so Camila López Ramírez is López to friends and López Ramírez on her ID. Brazil reverses the order under Portuguese custom, mother's surname then father's, and the last one is the everyday name. Guyana and Suriname sit apart entirely, with Indo-Caribbean surnames like Persaud and Ramnarine and Dutch-Javanese-Creole names like Sabajo and Kromodimedjo.

The regional accent is in the details. Argentina and Uruguay carry huge Italian heritage, so Bianchi, Pellegrini and Lautaro sit next to Fernández. Bolivia and Peru keep Quechua and Aymara surnames such as Quispe, Mamani, Condori and Huanca, which are among the most common names in the Andes. Chile has Mapuche names like Nahuel, Millaray and Huenchullán and an old-money tier of Basque surnames ending in -aga and -eta. Venezuela and Colombia's Caribbean coast are famous for inventive first names like Yusmary, Dubraska, Yeison and Wuilker.

This generator mixes all of those registers: trendy newborn names, compound names like Juan Pablo and Maria Eduarda, rural and older names, and immigrant German, Dutch, Arabic and Italian surnames that real South American rosters contain.

How to choose South American names

  • Match the country to the name: a character from La Paz or Cusco should plausibly carry Quispe, Mamani or Condori, while an Argentine from Rosario is more likely a Ferreyra, Bianchi or Scaglione.
  • For Spanish-speaking countries give formal characters two surnames (father's then mother's); for Brazilians use mother's then father's and call them by the last one.
  • Keep the accents and special letters: Sebastián, Muñoz, Araújo, João and Peñaloza read wrong without them, and Brazilians spell Gonçalves with a cedilla even in casual text.
  • Use compound first names (Juan Cruz, María José, Ana Clara, Pedro Henrique) for younger characters; they are treated as one name and are extremely common across the continent.
  • Want a Caribbean-coast Colombian or Venezuelan feel? Lean on the modern coined names such as Yeison, Yusmary, Dubraska, Wuilker and Génesis rather than classic saints' names.

Frequently asked questions

Which countries do these South American names come from?

The list covers all twelve sovereign countries on the continent: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela. Most entries are Spanish or Brazilian Portuguese names, with smaller sets of Quechua, Aymara, Mapuche, Guaraní, Indo-Guyanese and Surinamese names.

What is the difference between South American and Latin American names?

Latin America also includes Mexico, Central America and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, which have their own favorite names (for example Guadalupe and Xóchitl in Mexico). This generator stays south of Panama, so Mexican and Caribbean-specific names are left out and Brazilian Portuguese names are included.

How do South American surnames work?

In the Spanish-speaking countries people have two surnames, the father's first and the mother's second, and women keep their own names after marriage. Brazil puts the mother's surname before the father's. Everyday use almost always shortens to a single surname, and the one that sticks varies by country.

Can I use these names for characters, games or sample data?

Yes. The names combine common regional first names and surnames, so any match with a real person is coincidental. They work for novels, RPG characters, football-manager rosters, UX mockups and language practice.
