About Puerto Rican last names

Puerto Rican surnames are Spanish at the core. Rivera, Rodríguez, Ortiz, Colón, Meléndez, Maldonado, Negrón, Pagán, Quiñones and Vélez are among the names you meet most often on the island, and a few of them, such as Colón, Negrón and Pagán, are more at home in Puerto Rico than almost anywhere else in the Spanish-speaking world.

The nineteenth century added new layers. The Royal Decree of Graces of 1815 opened the island to Catholic settlers from friendly countries, and families arrived from Corsica, France, Ireland and the German states, alongside new arrivals from Spain's own Mallorca, Catalonia and Canary Islands. Corsicans settled the coffee country around Yauco and left names such as Mattei, Santoni, Pietri and Fraticelli. Mallorcans, many of them from the town of Sóller, and Catalans brought Ferrer, Rullán, Mayol and Bauzá. Canarian families carried Betancourt and Curbelo, and Basque ones Igartúa and Olavarría.

Like most of the Spanish-speaking world, Puerto Ricans use two surnames: the father's first surname, then the mother's. This list mixes single surnames with double ones in that order, so you can name one person or a whole family. A surname here tells you where a name came from, not where any one family did, and no last name proves ancestry.

How to choose Puerto Rican last names

  • Build a full name in the island order: given name, father's first surname, mother's first surname. A character named Carmen Torres Irizarry has a Torres father and an Irizarry mother, and is Carmen Torres for short.
  • Keep the accents. Colón, Pagán, Negrón, Vélez and Meléndez are stressed on the marked syllable, and dropping the mark changes how the name is read.
  • For a family from the coffee towns of the southwest, a Corsican surname such as Mattei, Santoni or Pietri sits naturally next to a Spanish one.
  • In the United States many Puerto Ricans use only the first surname, or join the two with a hyphen so both survive on forms. Decide which habit your character follows and stay with it.
  • Pair a very common surname with a rarer one, such as Rivera with Quilichini or Ortiz with Zalduondo, when a character has to stand out in a town full of Riveras.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common Puerto Rican last names?

Rivera, Rodríguez, Ortiz, Colón, Santiago, Torres, González and Vázquez are among the surnames you will meet most often in Puerto Rico. Meléndez, Maldonado, Negrón, Pagán, Quiñones and Vélez are everyday names too. All of them are in this list, next to several hundred that are much rarer, such as Nigaglioni, Serrallés and Olazagasti.

Why do Puerto Ricans have two last names?

Puerto Rico follows the Spanish custom: a child takes the father's first surname followed by the mother's first surname. Both are part of the full name, and a woman traditionally keeps her own surnames when she marries. In this list a double entry such as Vega Berríos or Colón Avilés reads father's side first, mother's side second.

Why are there Italian, French and Irish surnames in Puerto Rico?

In 1815 the Spanish Crown's Royal Decree of Graces invited Catholic settlers from friendly countries to the island. Corsicans, whose surnames look Italian, came in large numbers, along with French, Irish, German and other families. That is why Mattei, Pierluisi, Beauchamp, O'Neill and Riefkohl are Puerto Rican surnames today.

Does a surname from this list show that someone is Puerto Rican?

No. Almost every name here is also carried in Spain, in other parts of Latin America or in the countries the later settlers came from. A surname can point to where a name started, but it says nothing certain about one person or one family.
