Generate valkyrie names drawn from the Eddas and built in authentic Old Norse style: canonical valkyries like Brynhildr, Göndul and Skögul, original battle-compound names, and full names with patronymics and epithets. Ideal for Norse fantasy, D&D, God of War-style games and novels.
About valkyrie names
Valkyrie names come straight out of the Poetic Edda and Snorri's Prose Edda, and almost every one of them is a miniature war poem. The word valkyrja means "chooser of the slain," and the named valkyries follow suit: Hildr and Gunnr both mean battle, Göll is tumult, Hlökk is din or chains, Herfjötur is army-fetter (the panic that freezes a warrior), Skeggjöld is axe-age, Hrist is the shaker, Mist is the mist over the field, Randgríðr is shield-truce and Geirskögul is spear-shaker. The Eddic poems give about forty such names, and all of them are here alongside originals built on the same logic.
The originals follow Old Norse dithematic naming. A first element from war, weapons or the slain (Geir- spear, Hjör- sword, Val- the fallen, Hrafn- raven, Bryn- mailcoat, Rand- shield, Sig- victory) pairs with a standard feminine ending such as -hildr, -gunnr, -rún, -dís, -vör, -þrúðr or -gerðr. Hrafnhildr, Geirvör and Valdís all sound like they could sit in the Grímnismál list because they are made the same way.
You will also find saga-style full names with patronymics (Sigrún Högnadóttir), Old Norse bynames (Hildr in svarta, "the black") and English kennings (Kára Raven-Feeder). Drop the ð, þ and accents if your platform cannot show them: Þrúðr becomes Thrud, Göndul becomes Gondul.
Tips for choosing a name
- Give a valkyrie a name that describes what she does on the battlefield, not how she looks: the Eddic names are all about battle-noise, weapons, fetters and mist, never about beauty.
- Pair a short Old Norse given name with an epithet rather than a surname. Sigrún of the Spear-Storm or Hildr in svarta reads as mythic; Sigrún Andersen reads as modern Scandinavian.
- Brynhildr, Sigrún, Sváva and Kára are the valkyries with actual stories (Völsunga saga and the Helgi lays), so use them when you want a character readers may recognize, and invented compounds like Geirvör or Hrafnhildr when you want a blank slate.
- In the sources valkyries ride horses and sometimes wear swan-feather cloaks, so Svan- (swan), Jó- (horse) and -fjöðr (feather) elements are period-appropriate ways to hint at flight without saying wings.
- If you need a whole flight of valkyries, vary the endings: three names ending in -hildr in a row blur together, while Hildr, Göndul, Róta and Skuld each land distinctly.
Frequently asked questions
What are the real valkyrie names from Norse mythology?
Grímnismál names Hrist, Mist, Skeggjöld, Skögul, Hildr, Þrúðr, Hlökk, Herfjötur, Göll, Geirahöð, Randgríðr, Ráðgríðr and Reginleif. Völuspá adds Skuld, Gunnr and Göndul; Darraðarljóð adds Hjörþrimul, Sanngríðr, Svipul and Geirskögul; the Helgi lays and Völsunga saga give Sváva, Sigrún, Kára, Brynhildr and Sigrdrífa; Völundarkviða gives Hervör Alvitr, Ölrún and Hlaðguðr Svanhvít. The name-lists (þulur) add Hrund, Herja, Sveið, Þögn, Skalmöld, Geirdriful and others.
What does the name valkyrie mean?
Old Norse valkyrja combines valr, the corpses on a battlefield, with kjósa, to choose: a chooser of the slain. Valkyries decide who dies in battle and carry half the chosen to Odin's hall, Valhöll, where they serve mead to the einherjar. The related word Valfreyja (lady of the slain) is used of Freyja, who takes the other half.
Are valkyrie names only for female characters?
In the sources valkyries are always women, and the names use feminine endings (-hildr, -dís, -rún, -vör). If you want a male character with the same flavor, the equivalent masculine endings are -arr, -ulfr, -geirr and -mundr, so Hrafnhildr becomes Hrafngeirr and Valdís becomes Valmundr; the Viking and Norse generators linked above cover those.
How do I pronounce valkyrie names with ð, þ and ö?
Þ (thorn) is the th in thing, ð (eth) is the th in this, ö is roughly the vowel in British bird, and the accented vowels are long. So Þrúðr is roughly THROO-thr, Göndul is GUHN-dul and Hlökk is HLURK. The final -r is a grammatical ending and is often dropped in English, which is why Brynhildr usually appears as Brynhild.
