Generate Old Norse-styled names for dragons, wyrms and linnorms: compounds like Haugdreki and Eitrnadr, kenning bynames like Skarn Hoard-Warden and Bruni Hall-Burner, place-bound legends like Linnorm of Ormsdal, and she-dragons like Ormhild the Brood-Queen.

About Norse dragon names

The dragons of Norse tradition are mostly serpents. Old Norse called them ormr (serpent, worm) as readily as dreki (dragon), with nadr and linnr as poetic words for snake, and the great names follow suit: Fafnir brooding on his gold at Gnitaheath, Nidhogg gnawing the roots of Yggdrasil, and Jormungandr, the Midgard Serpent, coiled around the world. The Eddic poem Grimnismal adds lesser serpents under the World Tree, among them Goinn, Moinn and Grabak. Later Scandinavian folklore kept the type alive as the lindworm or linnorm, a huge, often wingless serpent haunting a lake, heath or barrow.

This list is built the same way. About a fifth are single Old Norse-style compounds, anglicized for easy typing: Haugdreki (barrow dragon), Eitrnadr (venom adder), Gullsvelg (gold swallower). A smaller set keeps Old Norse spelling, including bynames with inn, meaning the, such as Dreki inn Rauði, the Red Dragon. The largest group pairs a short name with a kenning, the riddle-phrases of early Germanic verse: Skarn Hoard-Warden, Rost Ship-Swallower, Forni Root-Gnawer. The rest are bare kennings like Roof-Bane and Swan-Road's Grief, place-bound legends such as Wyrm of the Hollow Fell, and she-dragons like Ormhild the Brood-Queen.

Apart from a handful of attested names, these are new coinages from real Old Norse word elements, so treat them as fiction, not scholarship.

How to choose Norse dragon names

  • Decide what kind of beast it is first. Orm and nadr names suit wingless, crawling linnorms; dreki and vaengr names suit flying fire-drakes; gandr and svelg names suit sea monsters on the scale of the Midgard Serpent.
  • Kennings name a thing by what it does. Build your own by pairing a target with an action, as in Shield-Melter, Keel-Breaker or Herd-Scatterer. A dragon can collect several over its life, the way saga heroes collect bynames.
  • Give a hoard-dragon a reason for the hoard. Fafnir killed his own father for a cursed treasure and became a dragon to guard it. Names like Valgrim the Shape-Changed or Illvar the Cursed hint at a similar backstory.
  • Anglicized spellings are easier for a gaming table to say and search. Save the Old Norse forms with eth and thorn, such as Þokunaðr or Níðdreki, for map labels and in-world texts where atmosphere matters more.
  • Pair a place-bound legend with a personal name for a two-layer reveal: the villagers whisper about The Svartvatn Serpent, while the dragon calls itself Djupnadr.

Frequently asked questions

What are the dragons in Norse mythology called?

The three best known are Fafnir, the gold-hoarding dragon slain by Sigurd; Nidhogg, who gnaws the roots of Yggdrasil; and Jormungandr, the Midgard Serpent that encircles the world. Grimnismal also names smaller serpents under the World Tree, including Goinn, Moinn, Grabak, Grafvollud, Ofnir and Svafnir. All of them appear in this list as style anchors for the original names.

What is the difference between a dragon, a wyrm and a linnorm?

In Old Norse sources the line is blurry: the poem Voluspa calls Nidhogg both a flying dreki (dragon) and a nadr (serpent) in a single stanza. Wyrm is the Old English cousin of ormr, and linnorm or lindworm is the later Scandinavian and German word for a huge serpent, often wingless. In practice, use dragon for winged fire-breathers and wyrm or linnorm for crawling, coiling, venomous ones.

What is a kenning, and how do I use one as a dragon name?

A kenning is a compact poetic phrase, common in Old Norse and Old English verse, that names something by description, such as whale-road for the sea. For a dragon, describe what it guards or destroys. Hoard-Sleeper, Roof-Bane and Raven-Feeder work as names on their own, while Skarn Hoard-Warden and Djupir Keel-Breaker attach the kenning to a personal name.

Are these real Old Norse words?

The building blocks are real: ormr, dreki, nadr, eitr (venom), haugr (barrow), gull (gold) and hrim (rime) are all Old Norse vocabulary, written here without accents. The combinations are modern coinages made for fiction and games, and only the small group of attested names comes from the Eddas or later folklore. Do not cite them as historical names.
