About Unsullied names
In A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones, the Unsullied are slave soldiers trained in Astapor. Part of that training is the loss of a name: each soldier draws a new one every day, a color joined to a kind of vermin. Grey Worm, Red Flea and Black Rat are names of this kind. A little over a third of this list follows the pattern, with a wide palette (Dun, Slate, Ochre, Tawny, Russet) and many creatures (Weevil, Shrew, Earwig, Newt).
When Daenerys frees the Unsullied, she tells them to choose their own names. Grey Worm keeps his, because it is the name he bore on the day he was freed. In the books others pick new names such as Hero and Stalwart Shield, and some go back to the names they had as children. The list covers both paths: chosen names built on virtues, arms and deeds (Steadfast Spear, Kept Oath, Walks Free), and birth names in the styles of the lands the boys were taken from, among them Ghiscari, Summer Islander, Lhazareen, Dothraki and Naathi.
A few names from the story are kept as anchors. Every other entry is an original name in the style of the setting for your own characters, and none of them is offered as part of the story.
How to choose Unsullied names
- Decide where your character stands in the story first. Before Astapor falls, a soldier has only a drawn name such as Rust Earwig or Moss Toad. After it, he may have chosen a name or gone back to an old one.
- A chosen name says what the soldier values. Arms names such as True Shield and Level Spear suit the rank and file, and deed names such as Stood at Yunkai or Holds the Gate suit a veteran with a story behind him.
- A birth name shows where the boy was taken from. Xhobo Qho reads as the Summer Isles, Hesho Maz Kuur as Lhazar, Rhaggo as the Dothraki sea and Mezzan of Tolos as the Ghiscari coast.
- For a whole unit, mix all three kinds. A captain who kept his drawn name beside a sergeant called Vigil and a spearman called Tamselen shows that each man made his own choice.
- Keep the plain register. These are short, blunt names, so leave out titles and house names: the Unsullied have neither.
Frequently asked questions
How do the Unsullied get their names?
In the story each soldier in training draws a new name every day, made of a color and a kind of vermin, so that he never thinks of any name as his own. Grey Worm is the best-known example. The list has many names of the same pattern, such as Dun Flea, Slate Mouse and Ochre Hornet.
Are these names from the books or the show?
Only a handful: Grey Worm, Red Flea and Black Rat among the drawn names, and Hero, Stalwart Shield, Loyal Spear, Black Fist, Mossador and a few more among the names of freed soldiers. Everything else was drafted in the style of the setting and does not appear in the books or the series. Treat those entries as ideas for your own characters.
What kind of name does a freed Unsullied choose?
The story shows three paths. Some keep the drawn name they had on the day they were freed, some choose a new name that states a virtue or a duty, and some take back a name from childhood. For the second path try Sentinel, Quiet Spear or Twice Named, and for the third a name such as Lhoro Maz Daar or Nossador of Naath.
Why do the birth names come from so many places?
The boys bought for training come from many peoples, so a restored name can point to almost any land around Slaver's Bay and beyond. The list uses Ghiscari, Summer Islander, Lhazareen, Dothraki and Naathi styles, with a few names from the Free Cities. Pick the style that fits the past you want your soldier to remember.
