Nicknames and epithets in the style of Westeros, from The Ashen Crow and Gatebreaker to Lord Too-Late and The Turnip Knight. Most are new names in the manner of the books and the show, with a few famous bynames such as The Young Wolf as reference points.

About this generator

In Westeros a byname does work that a given name cannot. The story is full of Jons, Walders and Aegons, so people are told apart by what they did, how they look or what they carry on a shield. Robb Stark is the Young Wolf for his age and the direwolf of his house. Jaime Lannister is the Kingslayer because he killed the king he had sworn to guard, and Davos Seaworth is the Onion Knight because he smuggled onions into Storm's End during a siege.

This list follows the same habits: color and beast pairs in the manner of the Red Viper, age and sigil names, one-word deed names, epithets tied to places on the map such as the Trident and the Kingswood, mystery knight names from the tourney lists, mocking names a rival would use, sellsword monikers from the Free Cities, names from the Iron Islands and beyond the Wall, and barracks names like those the Night's Watch hands out.

Most entries are new names in that style. A small share are famous bynames from the books and the show, kept as reference points, and nothing here should be read as belonging to an existing character unless you already know it does. Use them for roleplay, fan fiction, tabletop campaigns in the Seven Kingdoms or a gamertag.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Tie the name to one fact: a deed, a sigil, a scar or a home. The Onion Knight works because there is a story behind it, so decide the story before you take a name like Gatebreaker or The Knight of the Broken Bridge.
  • Decide who gave the name. Singers and sworn men hand out names like The Shield of the Marches, while rivals prefer Lord Too-Late or The Paper Shield. One character can carry both, and which one a speaker uses tells the reader whose side they are on.
  • Match the region. Salt, oars and drowning belong to the Iron Islands (Oarbreaker, Twice-Drowned), coin and contracts to the free companies (Halfpay, The Gilded Skull), and plain kitchen words to the Night's Watch (Spare Glove, Cold Porridge).
  • Use it the way the story does: alone, or after a given name. "The Ashen Crow rode in at dusk" and "Ser Willam, called the Ashen Crow" both read naturally.
  • Say it aloud. The bynames that last in the books are short and built from plain words, so pick the one your players or readers will still remember next session.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a nickname sound like Game of Thrones?

Plain old words, heraldry and a hint of a story. Names such as The Ashen Crow, Saltbeard, The Bell of Stoney Sept and The Hill That Walks use animals, colors, weather, weapons and real places on the map of Westeros rather than invented syllables. A good one makes the listener ask how the character earned it.

Are these nicknames from the books and the show?

Most are new names written in the style of the setting. A small share are famous bynames from the story, such as The Young Wolf and The Red Viper, included as examples of the patterns. The list does not mark which is which, so look a name up before you treat it as part of the story.

How do characters earn a byname in Westeros?

Usually in one of four ways: a deed, a look or habit, the arms of their house, or mockery. That is why the list has deed names like Lancebreaker, sigil names like The Limping Lion and unkind ones like Ser Falls-a-Lot. A name given in mockery often sticks hardest, and some characters end up wearing theirs with pride.

Can I combine a nickname with a full Westerosi name?

Yes. Take a given name and a house name from one of the related generators and add the byname after it, the way the story does. A sellsword or a brother of the Night's Watch can go by the byname alone, which suits names like Halfpay or Whetstone.
