Castle names in A Song of Ice and Fire follow a recognisable logic. George R. R. Martin draws on real English and Welsh place-naming, so most seats are plain, descriptive compounds: a feature of the land plus a fortification word (Winterfell, Riverrun, Highgarden, Deepwood Motte, Raventree Hall). The Old English suffixes he favours are -fell, -hall, -holt, -ford, -gate, -watch, -fort and -keep, with the odd French-flavoured name in the Reach and the Vale (Ashemark, Strongsong) and clipped, hard names in the North (Karhold, Hornwood, the Dreadfort).

Region shapes the sound. Northern seats are short and bleak, ironborn holds are salt and stone (Pyke, Saltcliffe, Hammerhorn), Dornish castles borrow Spanish and Moorish warmth (Sunspear, Godsgrace, Hellholt, the Water Gardens) and the Wall's forts are named for what they guard (Eastwatch-by-the-Sea, Queensgate, the Shadow Tower). Many names also carry a story: Harrenhal is named for its doomed builder, Storm's End for a siege by the gods, Castamere for a drowned mine.
