Generate Game of Thrones kingdom names in the style of A Song of Ice and Fire: the Seven Kingdoms and the petty realms that came before them, the Free Cities and empires of Essos, and hundreds of original kingdoms built to sit on the same map.

About Game of Thrones kingdom names

Kingdoms in A Song of Ice and Fire are almost never named after a ruler. George R.R. Martin names them after the land, in blunt Anglo-Saxon words: the North, the Reach, the Vale, the Riverlands, the Stormlands, the Iron Islands, Dorne. Before Aegon's Conquest the map was a patchwork of petty realms named the same way: the Kingdom of Mountain and Vale, the Kingdom of the Isles and the Rivers, the Storm Kingdom and the Marsh Kingdom of the Neck. Dynasties are remembered by title rather than territory: Kings of Winter, River Kings, Barrow Kings, Gardener Kings.

Essos sounds different on purpose. The Free Cities carry short Valyrian-flavoured names with Y and double vowels (Braavos, Tyrosh, Qohor, Volantis), the slaver cities of Ghis are harsh and sibilant (Astapor, Yunkai, Meereen), and the far east slides into the exotic with Yi Ti, Asshai-by-the-Shadow and the Kingdom of Sarnor. Rulers there are Sealords, Archons, Triarchs and Masters rather than kings.

To invent a kingdom that fits, pick one strong feature of its geography and build the name from it: a river, a shore, a forest, a weather pattern or a colour. The Kingdom of the Shivering Shore, the Saltmarch and the Vale of Thorns all sound like places a maester already has on a map.

How to choose Game of Thrones kingdom names

  • Name the land, not the king: the Reach, the Neck and the Rills sound far more Westerosi than 'Torrhen's Kingdom' ever could.
  • Use plain English compound words for Westeros (Blackwater, Wolfswood, Saltpans) and save Y-heavy, double-vowel spellings (Vaelos, Tyrhae, Ghozai) for anything Valyrian, Ghiscari or further east.
  • Give a petty kingdom two titles, one for the land and one for its dynasty: the Kingdom of the Hollow Hill ruled by the Hedge Kings. Martin does this with the Marsh Kingdom and its Marsh Kings.
  • Decide which great house absorbed your kingdom after the Conquest. An old realm that is now a lordship sworn to Highgarden or Winterfell feels like real history rather than a blank space.
  • Swap 'Kingdom of' for Principality, Freehold, Dominion or simply 'the' when the name starts to feel formulaic; Dorne, the Arbor and the Valyrian Freehold never needed the word king.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Seven Kingdoms in Game of Thrones?

At the time of Aegon's Conquest they were the Kingdom of the North, the Kingdom of Mountain and Vale, the Kingdom of the Isles and the Rivers, the Kingdom of the Rock, the Kingdom of the Reach, the Storm Kingdom and the Principality of Dorne. After the Conquest the realm was reorganised into nine regions, adding the Riverlands and the Crownlands, but the name stuck.

Are these kingdom names from the books and show, or made up?

Both. The list opens with every named kingdom, region, Free City and empire from A Song of Ice and Fire, House of the Dragon and The World of Ice and Fire, then continues with original realms written to follow the same naming patterns for fan fiction, roleplay and tabletop games.

How do I name a kingdom in Essos rather than Westeros?

Drop the English compound words and lean on Valyrian or Ghiscari sounds: short names with Y, double vowels or a hard final consonant (Vaelos, Tyrhae, Ghozai), and rulers called Sealords, Archons, Triarchs or Masters instead of kings. Far eastern realms can be stranger still, in the manner of Yi Ti, Asshai and K'Dath.

Can I use these names for a Game of Thrones roleplay or tabletop campaign?

Yes. Canon names belong to the source material and work for fan settings, while the original kingdoms here are free to use in your own Westeros-inspired campaigns, Crusader Kings mods, or fantasy worlds that borrow Martin's style.
